SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH - For winning the Scenic West Athletic Conference and hosting the Region 18 tournament, Salt Lake Community College has been rewarded with five All-Region 18 First Team selections. Three First Team selections came from College of Southern Nevada and Western Nevada College. Colorado Northwestern Community College landed two First Team spots. College of Southern Idaho posted one First Team performer. The 2014 Region 18 Player of the Year goes to Grant Heyman of CSN, also a First Team choice as an outfielder. Heyman posted a .383 batting average going 62 for 162 with 39 runs scored, 22 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, and 41 RBI. He owns a .704 slugging percentage and a .472 on base percentage. The 2014 Region 18 Pitcher of the Year was shared between First Team pitchers Conor Harber of WNC and Jason Jourdan of SLCC. Harber compiled a perfect season record of 7-0 with a miniscule 1.89 earned run average (ERA) in 62 innings pitched with eight starts. Known as a power arm, he enters the Region 18 tournament with 75 strikeouts compared to 29 walks. Opponents only hit .189 against him. Jourdan closed out the regular season with an 8-1 record and a 2.42 ERA in 67 innings pitched with 11 starts. A sinker ball pitcher, he punched out 45 hitters and only allowed 25 walks to go along with two complete games. The rest of the awards went to Relief Pitcher of the Year Eric Carter of SLCC and Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team outfield selection Joey Crunkilton of WNC. Carter appeared in 19 games and compiled 28.2 innings pitched. Possessing an ERA of 0.94, Carter led the SWAC with nine saves to go along with 30 strikeouts and only one extra-base hit allowed. Crunkilton offensively hit .318 going 49 for 154. He scored 28 runs, hit 15 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs to go along with 40 RBI and a .578 slugging percentage. Defensively he only committed one error in 45 chances. Had 42 putouts and two assists to post a .978 fielding percentage. The Coach of the Year went to DG Nelson of SLCC as he led the SWAC champions to a record of 34-16, 22-10 in SWAC play. Rounding out the First Team outfield selections was Zach Watts of SLCC. Watts posted a .360 batting average in 50 starts going 62 for 172 with 36 runs scored. He hit 13 doubles, eight triples, five home runs, and 39 RBI. He racked up a slugging percentage of .616 and stole 11 bags in 12 chances. The Region 18 First Team infield selections went to first baseman Luke Maher of CNCC, second baseman Tyler Brown CSN, third baseman Derek Whitney of SLCC, and shortstop Jake Morgan of CNCC. Maher hit .325 going 41 for 126 and scored 21 runs. He posted a slugging percentage of .548 to go with eight doubles, one triple, six home runs, and 17 RBI. Brown owned a .356 batting average going 58 for 163 and scoring 48 runs. He hit 12 doubles, two triples, one home run, and 28 RBI. Along with a .462 on base percentage, Brown stole 31 bases in 36 attempts. Whitney went 57 for 164 resulting in 33 runs scored and a .348 batting average. He hit 11 doubles, three triples, four home runs, and 40 RBI. He also posted an on base percentage of .402. Morgan compiled a .395 batting average going 58 for 147 with 11 doubles, seven triples and five home runs. He scored 29 runs while driving in 21 and posted an on base percentage of .486. Joining Harber and Jourdan as First Team pitcher selections was Christian Stolo of WNC and DJ Myers of CSN. Stolo started 12 games for the Wildcats, posting an ERA of 3.05 and a record of 5-3. He averaged a strikeout per inning with 59 strikeouts in 59 innings pitched and only 22 walks allowed. Myers threw 59.1 innings for CSN posting a 2.73 ERA and a record of 4-2 in 11 starts. He racked up a 2-1 strikeout to walk ratio with 40 punch outs compared to only 18 walks. The First Team designated hitter and catcher went to AJ Van Meetren of CSI and Colton Barkdull of SLCC. In 41 games, Van Meetren went 43 for 122 to hit an average of .352 to go along with 19 runs scored. He drove in 33 runs with 10 doubles, one triple, and three home runs. Barkdull hit .309 while racking up 47 hits and 30 run in 152 at bats. 12 doubles and four triples led to 25 RBI. Defensively he only allowed 15 stolen bases while throwing out 12 runners. The Region 18 Second Team outfield selections went to James Young of CSN, Caleb Summerhays of SLCC, and Jake Bennett of WNC. In 47 games Young hit .307 going 47 for 153 including eight doubles, eight triples, and five home runs. He drove in 26 RBI, scored 25 runs, and stole eight bases in 11 attempts. Summerhays went 50 for 168 en route to 29 runs scored and a batting average of .298. He stroked 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs, and 33 RBI with 21 walks. In 49 games, Bennett scored 40 runs and hit .318 going 47 for 148 including 30 walks. He hit nine doubles and three home runs to go along with 20 RBI and only committed one error in 64 chances. Second Team infield awards went to first baseman RJ Bush of CSI, second baseman Conner Klein of WNC, third baseman Rayne Raven of WNC, and shortstop Robert Grilli of SLCC. Bush racked up six doubles and two home runs while going 42 for 156 and a .269 batting average. With 21 RBI, Bush only committed six errors in 391 chances. Klein hit a .279 batting average in 48 games for the Wildcats. While going 34 for 122, Klein hit 10 doubles, a triple, and 19 RBI with a .388 on base percentage. Raven went 38 for 120 while scoring 22 run and hitting .317 on the season. His 25 RBI came as a result of 14 doubles, one triple, three home runs, and a slugging percentage of .525. Grillli started all 50 games for the Bruins hitting for a .288 batting average. Scoring 42 runs and going 51 for 177, Grilli hit 10 doubles, three triples, a home run, 27 RBI, and stole 23 bags in 31 attempts. The Second Team pitching staff went to Kolton Brost and Grant Kukuk of CSI, Chris Bradford of SLCC, and Spencer Greer of WNC. In 19 appearances and five starts, Brost posted an overall ERA of 2.71 and a record of 8-3 with 63 innings pitched. With only 12 walks, Brost struck out 62 batters and only allowed an opponent's batting average of .228. Kukuk put together a season ERA of 2.95 in 55 innings pitched. Only walking 15 batters all season, Kukuk had a record of 4-3 on 10 starts including one complete game performance. Bradford racked up a 3.47 ERA on a record of 6-3 over 14 appearances and 10 starts for the Bruins. He struck out 45 batters and only allowed 19 earned runs. Greer possessed a 6-4 record on 16 appearances, six starts, and 53.2 innings pitched leading to a 1.84 ERA. Only allowing 11 earned runs all season, Greer struck out 50 batters and closed two games for the Wildcats. The Second Team designated hitter selection went to Matt Waldron of CSN and the Second Team catcher went to Ricky Dorantes of CNCC. Waldron ended up going 28 for 93 with four doubles, four triples, and one home run to post an average of .301 in 34 games played. He scored 23 runs, had 12 RBI, and stole seven bases in nine attempts. Dorantes hit .276 going 35 for 127 and 14 runs. With nine doubles and 12 RBI, Dorantes only posted eight errors in 254 chances.The Region 18 Honorable Mention team went to outfielders Nick Urban of SLCC, Jordan Godman of CSI, and Alex Fife of WNC. Infielders were first basemen Zach Scott of CSN and Sam Hall of WNC, second baseman Taylor Snyder of SLCC, and shortstop Tony Roque of WNC. Pitchers were Zach Draper of CSI, Jarren Adam and Anthony Dixon of SLCC, Blair Goldsack and David Kuzma of CSN, Rayne Raven of WNC, and Ben Wright of CNCC. Designated hitter and catcher went to Garrett Bushman and Zach Willis both of SLCC.
