The College of Southern Nevada was hoping to eclipse the .500 mark for the first time this season. They would need to put together a solid weekend of baseball versus British Columbia's Okanagan College.
The opening contest of the weekend featured CSN sophomore lefty
Ben Cutting looking to set the tone for the weekend with another solid performance. CSN looked to win consecutive games for the first time all season. Cutting and OKC starter Cole Parussini mirrored each others efforts through four innings, each allowing just a pair of runs in what had become a nip and tuck opening game of the series. OKC took its second lead in the top of the sixth inning when a wild pitch from CSN's
Dan Skelly allowed Trevor Lofstrom to touch home, giving OKC a 3-2 advantage heading to the bottom of the sixth. Okanagan reliever Trevor Brigden took over for Parussini in a 3-3 ball game, but unfortunately for OKC the righty provided very little relief. Brigden would face ten Coyotes in the inning and when the dust settled CSN had plated seven runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead heading into the top of the seventh inning. Wiggins led the charge in the sixth with a two RBI single while Macias and Perns chipped in with one RBI apiece.
Trevor Mullaney pitched a clean top of the seventh inning to secure a 9-3 victory for CSN, improving the Coyotes record to 6-7 on the year.
Freshman
Isaiah Blaylock took the ball in game two, looking to build upon a stellar five strikeout shutout performance that led to his first victory in a Coyote uniform. Blaylock cut through the OKC lineup for a second straight start, striking out six batters over his 4 innings of work.
Dillon Johnson RBI single through the right side plated Perns, and freshman
Jordan Macias cleared the bases with a 3 RBI double to plate four first inning runs for the Coyotes. Sophomore
Jason Wallace followed up with some yard work of his own to keep the Coyote offense rolling in the bottom of the second inning. Wallace deposited a laser over the left centerfield wall to extend CSN's lead to 7-0 after just two offensive innings at the plate. Joey O' Brien and
Tyce O'Neill combined to throw 5 stellar innings of relief, allowing just 1 walk while striking out ten batters and preserving the shutout for starter
Isaiah Blaylock. The win evened CSN's record at 7-7 and extended the Coyotes winning streak to a season high three games.
Herbie Good took the ball looking to extend CSN's "good" fortune (pun intended) and put the Coyotes over the .500 mark for the first time since a season opening victory over Yavapai College nearly three weeks ago. Good struggled to consistently throw strikes, allowing three runs and lasting just three full innings. CSN trailed 3-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, but once again was bailed out by the big inning. CSN sent twelve batters to the plate, resulting in seven runs and seven hits to put the Coyotes comfortably ahead by a score of 8-3. Liberty freshman
Justin Lutes ignited the innings fireworks with a 2 RBI double, followed by single RBI's from Maggi, Macias, O'Brien and Perns.
Todd Danzeisen and
Blake Inouye combined to shutout OKC over four innings, allowing just four hits and two unearned runs. Danzeisen's third victory of the season extended the Coyotes win streak to four games and improved the teams overall record to 8-7.
The final game of the weekend featured former Bishop Gorman graduate
Alex Tisminezky getting his first start of the season versus OKC's Aiden Mordecai. Okanagan dented the scoreboard first for the second straight contest, however CSN would have have an answer for OKC as they did the entire weekend. Wallace got the scoring started with an RBI single in the third inning, followed immediately by a
Jay Martz three-run bomb. Two hitters later Said Urban scorched an RBI double down the left field line , to plate the Coyotes fifth run of the inning and freshman
Jordan Macias brought Urban home with an RBI single one batter leader to bring the Coyotes run total to six in the bottom of the third. CSN would continue too add on runs, plating at least a pair in innings five through eight to extend the Coyotes offensive total to a season high in runs (15) and hits (18).
Jay Martz paced the Coyotes over the final game of the weekend with four RBI's, followed by the dynamic duo of true freshman
Justin Lutes and
Jordan Macias who combined for 5 hits, 5 RBI's and three runs scored. Freshman
Bryce Bartlett earned the first victory of his Coyote career as CSN defeated Okanagan 15-8 to sweep the weekend series, extending its win streak to five games and improving the teams overall record to 9-7.
