Following a bye week the first place Coyotes (SWAC) welcomed the CNCC Spartans into "The Den" for another weekend of high-level Scenic West Athletic Conference play. CSN entered the weekend riding a five-game winning streak and a perfect 8-0 record at home.
Game one of the series was a homecoming of sorts for former Basic High School graduate Alec Myers (2-4) as he matched up with lefty
Todd Danzeisen (6-0).
Sergio Reyes and Ben Riding plated the first runs of the game in the top of the first inning with back to back RBI singles, staking the Spartans to a 2-0 lead.
CNCC held a two-run advantage until the bottom of the sixth inning, when
Joey O'Brien clutched up with a two-RBI single that plated
Nicco Festa and
Justin Lutes knotting up the game 2-2.
Coyote relievers
Alex Tisminezky and
Blake Inouye combined to fire 4.2 innings of one-hit baseball to keep the Spartans off the scoreboard and set the stage for another dramatic Coyote walk-off victory. With runners on the corners freshman
Jordan Macias lifted a fly ball to leftfield that was just deep enough to plate
Joey O'Brien from third on a game-winning sacrifice fly. CSN defeated CNCC 3-2 in eleven innings to extend its winning streak to six games.
Herbie Good took the ball in game two of the series looking to build upon arguably his best start of the season. Good fired 5.2 innings of three hit baseball, allowing just a single run and striking out five batters.
The game remained tied until Cole Ensing singled home Sergio Reyes in the top of the fourth to plate the first run of the game.
A misfielded bunt single off the bat of
Nicco Festa allowed
Jay Martz to dent home and tie the game 1-1.
Dillon Johnson singled home
Justin Lutes in the bottom of the sixth to give the Coyotes a 2-1 lead. One batter later
Jay Martz smashed a 2 RBI triple to left-centerfield that scored
Dillon Johnson,
Joey O'Brien and eventually himself on a throwing error by shortstop Taylor Wright that extended the Coyotes lead to 5-1.
Timmy Burtzloff pitched a scoreless inning of relief to even his season record at 2-2. CSN defeated CNCC 5-1 in game two, improving to 15-3 in SWAC play and 28-10 overall.
Southpaw
Ben Cutting (2-0) was on the bump for CSN in game three, coming off two of his most effective starts of the season. Cutting allowed just three runs over his last in his 14 innings of work, surrendering 7 hits and striking out 13 batters.
For the third straight game CNCC struck first when Sergio Reyes singled back up the box in the opening inning to score Taylor Wright and Zach Peterson.
Jason Wallace doubled home CSN's first run of the day in the bottom of the first and
Jordan Macias tied the game up 2-2 in the fourth with a single back up the box that plated
Kaid Urban. Centerfielder
Jarrett Perns broke the tie with a 2 RBI single to give the Coyotes its first lead of the game.
Dillon Johnson followed two batters later with a clutch two out single that scored
Jarrett Perns and
Christian Maggi to expand CSN's lead to 6-2.
Joey O'Brien pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning to secure
Ben Cutting's third victory of the season. CSN defeated CNCC 6-2 in game three of the series, improving the Coyotes season record versus the Spartans to 6-1 and extending the teams winning streak to eight games.
Freshman
Isaiah Blaylock (6-1) entered the final game of the weekend looking to win his sixth consecutive start and move into sole possession of the team lead in wins. CNCC struck first for the fourth consecutive game, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning as Blaylock struggled to consistently locate his pitches for strikes.
A three run rally by CSN in the bottom of the first sparked by RBI's from
Justin Lutes and
Dillon Johnson erased the Spartans lead and knotted the game up 3-3.
The game remained tied until
Dillon Johnson plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning, when his rope triple chased home
Justin Lutes and
Jarrett Perns to put the Coyotes up 5-3. The Spartans responded with single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth inning to force extra innings for the second time this weekend.
After
Blake Inouye clutched up with a three up three down top of the tenth inning, the stage was once again set for an epic CSN comeback.
After
Joey O'Brien grounded into a bases loaded 5-2-3 double play, catcher
Cody Milner stepped up to the plate. The former Green Valley Gator ripped the first pitch he saw back up the box, to plate
Dillon Johnson and give the Coyotes its second walk-off win of the weekend.
CSN defeated CNCC 6-5 to sweep the Spartans, improving its home conference record to 12-0 and extend its overall winning streak to nine games.
