Following a seven year absence, the College of Southern Nevada made its return to Grand Junction, Colorado to take part in the 60th edition of the NJCAA World Series. The first hurdle for #11 Southern Nevada was #17 Wabash Valley College.Â
A pair of southpaws took the mound Saturday afternoon looking to pitch their teams into the winners bracket, sophomore
Ben Cutting (6-1) for the Coyotes and freshman ace Max Roberts (9-1) for the Warriors.
Two-out RBI hits became the theme of this game, but much to the dismay of CSN it was WVC who did the majority of the damage with two down.
David Rodriguez deposited a two-run shot to right center, the first of three two out RBI hits produced by the Warriors.
Blake Wiggins came into the World Series swinging a white-hot bat, and it continued Saturday afternoon. Wiggins launched a two-run long ball deep over the left field wall in the bottom of the first to knot the game up 2-2. CSN rallied to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second when a
Jay Martz double to left-centerfield plated
Cody Milner. Unfortunately for the Coyotes, the lead evaporated in the top of the third when Romero Harris blasted the Warriors second two-out round tripper of the game.
WVC tallied its third crooked number of the game in the top of the fourth, extending its lead to 7-3 and ending Cutting's day after just 3.2 innings of work.
Wiggins continued to make his presence known in Grand Junction, lifting his second home run of the day over the right field wall to cut the Coyotes deficit to 7-4.
Future Louisville Cardinal commit Logan Parrett came out the pen to begin the sixth inning and was as electric as advertised. Parrett fired three scoreless frames, allowing just a pair of hits and lowering his already microscopic E.R.A. of 1.47. The Warriors added four runs over the final three innings to defeat CSN by a final score of 11-4.
Romero Harris led all Warriors with three RBI's followed by David Rodriguez and Jarrod Watkins with two apiece. Max Roberts (5 IP, 4 ER, 4 hits) earned the victory for WVC as they move on to face the Crowley College Tigers Monday evening at 7:30 p.m.
CSN drops into the losers bracket, and will be back in action Sunday morning at 10:00 a.m. (MST)Â versus the Wallace-Dothan Governors in a win or go home game to open up day two of NJCAA World Series play.
