On a cool Saturday night in Henderson Nevada, Coach
Nick Garritano joined the elite fraternity of coaches to accumulate 600 career wins. Coach Garritano's Coyotes defeated Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs of Lethbridge Canada 7 – 1 giving Coach Garritano number 600 and extending the Coyotes win streak to eight.
Garritano began his illustrious coaching career where he once began his athletic career, at Chaparral High School in Las Vegas. Garritano was a three-sport athlete until his Junior year when he focused on football and baseball, and was highly recruited as a place kicker who would eventually choose UNLV to further his athletic and academic career. Garritano was inducted into the UNLV Sports Hall of Fame in October 2010 and he is 3
rd all-time in points scored for UNLV Football along with other numerous awards. After graduating from UNLV Garritano was invited out to the 1996 San Francisco 49er's minicamp as a place kicker, but was unable to earn a starting spot. Garritano then returned to Chaparral High School, the place where it all began and took the role as interim head coach for their baseball program during the 1995-1996 season. He was then hired as the Head Junior Varsity baseball coach at Chaparral for the 1996-97 season.
In the summer of 97', Garritano would take the Head Junior Varsity baseball coaching job at Green Valley that would only last one year. Garritano took over the Head Baseball Coaching job at Green Valley in the spring of 1999. Coach Garritano vividly remembers his first game as a head coach, "we played Cimarron Memorial High School and lost 9-7, the pitcher was Mike Esposito." He would start his head coaching career going 0-2, but Garritano's two game losing streak would not last long. His first win came in Lake Havasu City with sophomore pitcher Jake Dittler who was drafted by the Cleveland Indians with the 51
st overall pick in the 2001 MLB first year player draft. Garritano spent 11 seasons as the Green Valley Gator baseball skipper winning two state championships going 316 - 118 before moving to the College of Southern Nevada.
Garritano's first season for the CSN Coyotes began in the spring of 2011. Since his time at CSN Garritano has gone 285 – 144, winning four Scenic West Athletic Conference titles, two Region 18 titles, one Western District title, and has made 1 appearance in the Junior College World Series. In 2015 Coach Garritano was inducted into the Southern Nevada Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Although this was a major milestone for Coach Garritano, he's staying very humble, and in the locker room after the win he gave all the credit to the players and his coaching staff. He said he started coaching to help players develop as athletes and young men and that's what matters most. He continued by saying winning number 600 was nice, but he doesn't want to take anything away from what this current group of kids along with his past teams have been able to accomplish.
He would like to send a special thanks to his wife Camille who has been with him for all his 601 wins but more importantly, his 262 loses. In his office he rubbed his head when he took time to add up his 862 games played and said wow, I'm lucky to have her. He also wants to thank his two kids Nicky and Ava who have put up with their dad being a baseball coach all these years and to his parents Don and Patty Garritano for all their love and support. He would also like to thank long time pitching coach and best friend
Bryan Gidge.
The entire CSN Athletics staff would like to say Congratulations Coach on #600 and we look forward to many more along the way!
