Offense leads CSN to series win over NIC

The CSN softball team relied on their offensive outbursts and timely pitching en route to a 3-1 series win over North Idaho College in their first home conference series of the 2013 season on Friday and Saturday.

The Coyotes (12-9, 7-5 SWAC) rolled past the Cardinals 8-0 in Friday's opener, then followed it up with a 5-3 win in the second game.

Sarah Rivera was excellent in the circle, tossing a two-hit shutout in Game 1 for CSN.  Rivera surrendered one walk and struck out three in the win.  Rhiana Balaun blasted a two-run home run and finished 2-for-2 with four RBIs.  Jasmine Fukuda also went 2-for-2 and had an RBI double.

In the second game, the Coyotes scored five unanswered runs to secure the win.  North Idaho put together a 3-run third inning, capped by a two-run single by Desirae Tinoco.

CSN got on the board in the bottom half of the third on an RBI single by Hope Curtis   Presley Whetman scored pinch-runner Karla Serrano on a fielder's choice in the fourth to make it 3-2.  Then in the fifth, Tiffani Taylor scored on an error, and a sacrifice fly by Curtis scored Mikela Manewa to put the Coyotes ahead for good.  Destinee Chang homered in the sixth to add insurance for CSN.

North Idaho (4-11, 1-7) came out on a mission in Saturday's first game, walloping CSN 11-0 before the Coyotes regrouped and bounced back with a 13-9 win in the nightcap to secure the series victory.

In Saturday's win, CSN came out swinging, posting five runs in the first and adding six more in the third to take an 11-3 lead.  The Coyotes couldn't hold on for the run-rule in the fifth, as North Idaho belted two home runs -- a solo shot, followed up by a two-run shot -- to keep the game going and cut the Coyotes lead to 12-6.

Rivera was 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, and also pitched the final 1 2/3 innings of the game in relief of Alashanee Medina  allowing no runs on one hit.  Taylor was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.  Fukuda and Manewa each had two hits tor CSN.
