HENDERSON, Nev. (May 12, 2021) – A difficult day featured a pair of heartbreaking defeats for the College of Southern Nevada softball team.
Entering Wednesday's Region 18 semifinal matchup with No. 1 Salt Lake, the Lady Coyotes were full of momentum and hoping to down the Scenic West regular-season champion Bruins. Instead, CSN fell in a heartbreaking 11-10 loss to Salt Lake in the winners' bracket game, then lost 5-0 to Southern Idaho in an elimination game late in the day. The losses end Southern Nevada's season with an overall record of 31-31.
Salt Lake and Southern Idaho will play for the Region 18 championship on Thursday at Lady Coyote Softball Field.
Salt Lake 11, Southern Nevada 10: An early lead didn't stand up in a loss for the Lady Coyotes.
Caitlin Covington hit a two-run home run in the opening inning to give CSN a 2-0 lead. Salt Lake responded to score eight runs in the next two innings, with Covington adding an RBI single in the third inning and
Bailey Pepper hitting a grand-slam home run in the fourth inning to tie the game at 8-8. CSN scored a pair of runs in the fifth inning before SLCC responded to take the lead for good.
Covington was 2-of-3 at the plate with a trio of RBI's.
Southern Idaho 5, Southern Nevada 0: CSN struggled to convert baserunners into runs in the loss, falling to end their season.
Mayu Nishijima led the Lady Coyotes, going 3-of-4.
Kayley Cole was 1-of-3 at the plate.
