PRESCOTT, AZ. (May 20, 2021) – The opening game of the 2021 NJCAA West District championships did not go the way of the College of Southern Nevada baseball team, with the Coyotes dropping the opening game of the tournament.
In spite of holding an early lead, Southern Nevada dropped a 16-13 decision to Yavapai College in the tournament opener. The loss drops CSN into the one-loss bracket, with CSN scheduled to play a pair of games Friday and Saturday to advance.
The Coyotes started the game in fine form, thanks to
Johnny Cuevas hitting two-run home runs in the first and second innings to help boost CSN to a 7-0 lead midway through the third inning. However, Yavapai responded quickly by scoring 10 unanswered runs to take the lead.
Jacob Godman hit a solo home run in the fifth inning, along with adding an RBI single in the sixth inning, before
Joseph Walls hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to help Southern Nevada reclaim a 13-12 lead. Unfortunately, a three-run home run in the sixth inning provided the go-ahead runs for host Yavapai.
Godman went 3-of-4 in the game, while
Zach Culver was 3-of-5 with a trio of RBI's. CSN finished the game with six extra-base hits.
Joey Magrisi earned the pitching loss for Southern Nevada, surrendering a pair of runs.
