HENDERSON, Nev. (April 16, 2023) – The No. 16 Southern Nevada Baseball team opened the week with a series of strong wins over a longtime rival, giving them the solo lead in the Scenic West Athletic Conference standings.
However, CSN ends its most recent Scenic West rival series back in the same position, tied with Salt Lake atop the standings after splitting a Sunday doubleheader with Southern Idaho. The Coyotes dropped their first game, 6-4, then rebounded to post a 3-2 win. Southern Nevada is now 34-10 overall and 18-6 in Scenic West games.
The Coyotes will travel to Colorado Northwestern next weekend.
Southern Idaho 6, Southern Nevada 4: A late CSN comeback came up short against the Golden Eagles.
It was all Southern Idaho early, with CSI holding a 6-0 lead after the second inning. CSN attempted a comeback in the seventh inning, with
Hunter Katschke hitting an RBI single to cut the deficit to 6-2. Southern Nevada had the bases loaded, down by a pair of runs, but couldn't come up with the winning runs as
Keoni Young grounded out.
Mikey Cruz, Jr., went 3-of-4 in the loss.
Southern Nevada 3, Southern Idaho 2: CSN struck first in a low-scoring game, holding on for the win.
Kyle Kiernan hit a two-run single in the first inning, giving the Coyotes a lead they would never relinquish. Southern Idaho returned first in the bottom half of the frame, scoring a pair of runs, but neither team scored the rest of the contest.
Hunter Katschke went 3-of-5 at the plate in the win, leading Southern Nevada.
Evan Bunevich earned the pitching win, throwing 5.1 innings on his way to an 8-1 record.
