College of Southern Nevada Secures Spot in Championship Saturday with Decisive Victory Over South Mountain Community College

Phoenix, AZ – May 17, 2024 – In a high-stakes matchup at South Mountain Field, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) Coyotes delivered a commanding performance to defeat South Mountain Community College (SMCC) 10-5, securing their place in Championship Saturday of the Western District Tournament. With solid pitching, timely hitting, and resilient defense, the Coyotes demonstrated why they are one of the top teams in the tournament.

First Inning Momentum

The Coyotes wasted no time setting the tone for the game. Jet Gilliam led off with a double down the left field line, instantly putting pressure on SMCC's defense. Brady Ballinger followed with a single to left field, advancing Gilliam to third. Mikey Cruz then hit a fielder's choice, allowing Gilliam to score and give CSN an early 1-0 lead. Although the inning ended with only one run, it was clear that CSN's offense was locked in and ready to capitalize on every opportunity.

Power Display in the Second Inning

CSN's bats continued to sizzle in the second inning. Tyman Long launched a solo home run to left field, extending the lead to 2-0. The Coyotes weren't done yet. Kaiden Smaka doubled down the left field line, setting up another scoring opportunity. Nicky Garritano delivered with a single to right field, driving in Smaka to make it 3-0. SMCC pitcher M. Lighthall struggled to find his rhythm against the relentless CSN lineup.

Defensive Showcase and Further Scoring

While the Coyotes' offense was impressive, their defense was equally solid. In the top of the third inning, Naun Haro, CSN's starting pitcher, retired SMCC's batters in order, showcasing his command on the mound. Haro continued his dominance, allowing only one run through the first five innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, CSN's offense struck again. Gilliam singled to center field, and Ballinger followed with a towering two-run homer to right field, increasing the lead to 5-0. The Coyotes' aggressive approach at the plate paid dividends as they continued to put pressure on SMCC's pitching staff.

SMCC Attempts a Comeback

SMCC managed to get on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning. Carlos Mata singled up the middle and advanced to second on a balk. Justin Terranova's fly out allowed Mata to move to third, and William Waters drove him in with a single to right field, cutting the deficit to 6-1.

The seventh inning brought more action as SMCC mounted a significant rally. Kevin Waslefsky and Logan Springmey walked, setting the stage for a clutch hit by Michael Romero. Romero tripled down the right field line, driving in two runs. A fielding error by Cruz allowed Romero to score, making it 6-4. However, Tyler Ray, who had replaced Haro on the mound, induced a crucial double play to end the inning and limit the damage.

Coyotes' Resilience

Despite SMCC's rally, the Coyotes remained unfazed. In the bottom of the eighth inning, they broke the game wide open. Wheatley walked, and Garritano followed with a walk of his own. Gilliam reached on a throwing error by SMCC's third baseman, loading the bases. Ballinger continued his stellar performance with a single through the left side, driving in two more runs. Ashton Zacher then singled to center field, scoring another run. Marcos Carrasco, pinch-running for Cruz, scored on a wild pitch, capping a four-run inning and extending the lead to 10-5.

Closing the Game

Kaden Soder took the mound in the ninth inning to close out the game for the Coyotes. Despite a single by Romero, Soder remained composed, inducing a double play to end the game and secure the victory for CSN. The final out triggered celebrations as the Coyotes clinched their spot in Championship Saturday.
