Story Links

Henderson, NV - On a crisp morning at Lady Coyote Field, the College of Southern Nevada (CSN) Coyotes faced a challenging matchup against North Idaho College (NIC), succumbing to a 7-2 defeat in a game that showcased intense competition and a dramatic final inning surge by NIC. This encounter marked CSN's second game in the 2025 Coyote Kickoff Classic, moving their record to 1-1.

The game commenced with both teams displaying strong defensive skills, keeping the first inning scoreless. It wasn't until the second inning that NIC broke the deadlock with a run due to a fielding error by CSN, giving NIC an early lead. Despite the setback, CSN responded in the third inning when Camryn Hunkins, who had a strong performance throughout the game, scored after Destinee Lopez grounded out to second base.

Tensions heightened in the fourth inning as CSN managed to even the score. Chaleah Workman's strategic base running allowed her to steal third and subsequently score on another throwing error by NIC's catcher, leveling the score at 2-2. Both teams ramped up their efforts, resulting in a stalemate that lasted until the seventh inning.

The game remained tied until the top of the seventh, when NIC seized the opportunity to capitalize on CSN's defensive errors. A sequence of hits and strategic plays, including a key double by Charlie Stern that drove in three runs, allowed NIC to pull ahead significantly with five runs in the inning, bringing the score to an imposing 7-2.

CSN's pitcher, Mckenna Cahoon, struggled to contain NIC's batters in the seventh inning, leading to her replacement by Blakelee Christian, who managed to stem the tide but not before the damage was done. Cahoon's efforts were commendable despite the outcome, with six strikeouts and managing to hold NIC until the explosive seventh inning.

Offensively, CSN showed promise with seven hits, matching NIC's intensity at the plate. Hunkins led CSN with three hits, showcasing her speed and skill on the bases. However, the team struggled to convert these opportunities into runs, leaving nine runners on base throughout the game.

NIC's pitcher, Maliyah Mann, delivered a strong performance, keeping CSN's batters in check with eleven strikeouts and allowing only two runs over seven innings. Her ability to close out innings without giving up significant advances was crucial in maintaining NIC's lead.

The game highlighted areas of growth for CSN, particularly in minimizing errors and capitalizing on scoring opportunities. The defensive lapses in the seventh inning underscored the need for composure and precision under pressure, lessons that the Coyotes will undoubtedly take to heart as they progress through the season.

Despite the loss, the game provided valuable experience against a formidable opponent. The Coyotes demonstrated resilience and the potential to bounce back, with standout performances from players like Hunkins and Workman, who consistently challenged NIC's defense.

Looking ahead, CSN will focus on tightening their defense and enhancing their ability to drive in runs when opportunities arise. As the season unfolds, the team's ability to learn from each game will be pivotal in their quest for success in upcoming matchups.

Today's game, although a setback, is just one part of a long season. The Coyotes remain optimistic and determined, ready to address their shortcomings and come back stronger in their next outing. The lessons learned from today's intense battle will serve as a foundation for improvement and growth as CSN continues to compete at a high level in collegiate softball.
