YUMA, AZ – February 14, 2025 – The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes kicked off their three-game series against Arizona Western College with a resounding 15-5 victory, demonstrating their offensive prowess at Walt Kammann Field. The win advances the Coyotes to a stellar 11-1 overall record and 9-1 in conference play.
The game started with the Matadors seizing an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning off doubles by J. Diaz and N. Houston. The Coyotes, however, quickly responded in the second inning, overcoming this early deficit by plating four runs, highlighted by Jack Wheatley's double that drove in a key run.
The Coyotes continued to pile on the pressure in the third inning, mirroring their second-inning performance by adding another four runs. Contributions came from across the lineup, with Matthew Ziroli and Anthony Marnell IV each hitting run-scoring doubles to extend the lead.
The decisive blow came in the sixth inning when CSN erupted for seven runs, effectively sealing the game. This surge was fueled by aggressive batting, including another double from Matthew Ziroli, and capitalized on Arizona Western's pitching struggles. Jack Wheatley and Harvey Smerdon also contributed significant RBIs during the inning.
On the mound, Chase Frey started for CSN but faced challenges, allowing five runs in just two innings. Simon Lemke, who took over in the third, delivered a standout performance, pitching three scoreless innings and stabilizing the game to earn the win. Mayson Reichartz closed out the game with a scoreless inning, showcasing the depth of CSN's bullpen.
Arizona Western's pitchers struggled throughout, with starter I. Cordoba giving up eight runs before being pulled in the third. His relief, including P. Medina, I. Camacho, and F. Brunner, fared little better, as CSN hitters continued to find gaps in their defense.
Defensively, the Coyotes were solid apart from a few early missteps, including a passed ball that contributed to the Matadors' initial surge. The team demonstrated resilience by quickly overcoming their early deficit and controlling the game from the third inning onward.
This emphatic victory sets a strong tone for the College of Southern Nevada as they look to continue their dominance in the ACCAC. With powerful hitting and effective pitching from Lemke and the bullpen, the Coyotes are well-positioned for success in the remaining games of the series.
