Roughriders Dismantle Coyotes 22-9 in Series Finale

Story Links

HENDERSON, NV — In a surprising turn of events, the Yavapai College Roughriders delivered a commanding performance to defeat the College of Southern Nevada Coyotes 22-9 on Saturday afternoon at Morse Stadium. This victory prevented a series sweep in the final game of their three-game ACCAC conference matchup.

The Roughriders unleashed a relentless offensive onslaught, scoring 22 runs on 20 hits, including a massive eight-run inning in the second that set the tone for the rest of the game. Yavapai's lineup was led by C. Horsey and M. Peterson, who both homered during the game. Horsey went 4-for-7 with a home run and four RBIs, while Peterson added a grand slam that capped off the eight-run explosion in the second inning.

Yavapai's pitching, while not flawless, was effective enough to maintain the lead. O. Fernandes claimed the win, allowing two runs over 1.2 innings in a game that saw a parade of pitchers from both teams trying to stem the flow of runs.

The Coyotes, who entered the game with high hopes after their previous victory, started well with a run in the first inning but found themselves overwhelmed by Yavapai's relentless attacks. Roy Durham and Anthony Marnell IV were bright spots in CSN's lineup, contributing with RBIs and doubles, but the team's efforts were not enough to catch up with Yavapai's lead.

Defensively, CSN managed to keep a clean sheet with no errors, but their pitchers struggled to contain Yavapai's hitters. The Coyotes used a total of eleven pitchers in an attempt to find an answer to the Roughriders' bats, but the strategy was unsuccessful as Yavapai found gaps in each change on the mound.

The game, which lasted over four hours, saw the Roughriders effectively use their lineup's depth, with every starter contributing to the scoring frenzy. The final inning epitomized Yavapai's dominance, scoring seven runs to seal a resounding victory and make a statement in conference play.

With this win, Yavapai improves their record and confidence moving forward in ACCAC play, while the Coyotes must regroup and reassess after a tough loss at home. The series concluded with CSN holding a 32-10 record and 18-9 in the conference, reflecting the competitive nature of the league and the challenges that lie ahead.
