Thatcher, AZ - The College of Southern Nevada clinched the 2025 ACCAC regular season championship on Friday afternoon, rolling past Eastern Arizona College 14-3 in six innings at Gila Hank Stadium in Thatcher, Arizona. With the victory, CSN improved to 41-10 overall and 25-9 in conference play, officially locking up the top seed for the upcoming Region 1 playoffs.
The Coyotes wasted no time getting on the board, striking for three runs in the top of the first inning. Chaz McNelis opened the game with a double to right-center and came home on a single by Harvey Smerdon. After Smerdon advanced to third, Roy Durham drove him in with a double, and Brandon Swanson followed with a two-out RBI single to center, giving CSN an early 3-0 lead.
After Eastern Arizona answered with a run in the bottom half, CSN's offense erupted again in the third inning. With two outs, the Coyotes loaded the bases and capitalized when Alex Rhynes drew a walk to force in a run. McNelis was then hit by a pitch to plate another, followed by a two-RBI double from Smerdon and a two-RBI single from Anthony Marnell IV. When the dust settled, the Coyotes led 9-3.
CSN blew the game wide open with another five-run outburst in the fourth. After Tyler Garritano was hit by a pitch and Swanson singled, Matthew Ziroli reached on an error that brought in a run. Jack Wheatley laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners, and Rhynes reached on another Eastern Arizona error to score another.
McNelis added a sacrifice fly to score Ziroli, and Smerdon delivered his third hit and fourth RBI of the game with a single to center. Marnell IV followed with an RBI double to right-center, giving CSN a commanding 14-3 lead.
Right-hander Kaden Soder earned the win with a solid five-inning performance. He scattered six hits, allowed three runs, struck out two, and did not issue a walk. Soder kept the Gila Monsters from mounting any serious rally after the second inning, retiring the side in order in both the third and fourth innings.
Harvey Smerdon led the Coyotes with a 3-for-3 day, collecting a double, four RBIs, and three runs scored. Marnell IV also drove in three runs on two hits, while McNelis scored twice and knocked in two with a double and a sacrifice fly. Swanson added three hits and an RBI from the designated hitter spot, and Ziroli finished with two hits and two runs scored.
With the win, the College of Southern Nevada captured its first ACCAC regular season championship since joining the league. The Coyotes showcased their depth, patience, and power throughout the game, forcing five errors and drawing five walks while committing no defensive miscues themselves.
CSN will continue the three-game series against Eastern Arizona with momentum firmly on their side. With the top seed secured, the Coyotes now shift their focus toward closing the regular season strong and preparing for a postseason run.Â
