Coyotes Fall Late in High-Scoring Battle Against Yavapai

PRESCOTT, AZ (April 25, 2025) – In a wild, back-and-forth contest, the College of Southern Nevada softball team fell to Yavapai College, 12-6, in game two of their four-game ACCAC series Friday evening in Prescott.

With the loss, the Coyotes moved to 24-19 overall and 16-10 in ACCAC play on the season.

CSN showed plenty of fight, pounding out 12 hits and battling back from early deficits, but a decisive seven-run sixth inning by Yavapai proved to be the difference.

After falling behind 4-0 through the first two innings, the Coyotes began their climb back in the third. Jimena Barraza-Caro worked a walk to lead off, and Justice Lavin followed with a double to spark a two-run frame. Destinee Lopez brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, and Chaleah Workman was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run, cutting the Roughriders' lead to 4-2.

Yavapai answered with a run in the fourth to stretch the lead to 5-2, but CSN responded again. In the fifth, Miken Jacobsen singled and later scored on a double by Chloe Makinney, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

The Coyotes kept the pressure on in the sixth when Camryn Hunkins and Barraza each reached base and Lavin delivered an RBI single, making it 5-4. Another sacrifice fly by Lopez brought home the tying run, leveling the game at 5-5.

However, the bottom of the sixth unraveled for Southern Nevada. Yavapai strung together seven hits and took advantage of a passed ball and a walk to post a seven-run outburst, surging ahead 12-5.

CSN scratched across one more run in the seventh when Jacobsen singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Athena Tonga'onevai, but the rally fell short.

Jacobsen had a strong night at the plate for the Coyotes, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Makinney also posted a three-hit game, including a pair of doubles and an RBI. Lavin finished with a pair of hits and three RBIs to lead the offensive effort.

In the circle, the Coyotes used four different pitchers. Bryn Connors started and was followed by London Lamb, Mckenna Cahoon, and Aniya Edwards. Cahoon was tagged with the loss after Yavapai's big sixth inning.

Yavapai pounded out 20 hits in the game, led by Brianna Baca's 4-for-5 effort and Charley Pitrat's three RBIs. Breanne Petty picked up the win in relief for the Roughriders.

The Coyotes and Roughriders will continue the series Saturday with another doubleheader in Prescott.
