HENDERSON, NV — The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes rallied with a four-run sixth inning to overcome the Arizona Western College Matadors, securing a 5-2 victory on Saturday at Morse Stadium. This win advances the Coyotes' impressive season record to 34-10 and 20-9 in ACCAC conference play.
Kody Bialas earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season with three innings of shutout relief where he allowed only one hit and struck out three. Logan Smith clinched his first save with a solid seventh inning, shutting down a potential rally by the Matadors.
The game remained tight through the first five innings, with Arizona Western initially taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Bronson Neave and Luca Hoerger scored after a series of walks and a hit-by-pitch, combined with a wild pitch from CSN starter Chase Frey, who struggled with control but managed to keep the game within reach.
CSN narrowed the gap in the bottom of the second when Jack Wheatley drove in Anthony Marnell IV with a single after a fielding error and a wild pitch by AWC's starter Diego Evans had advanced the runner to third. The Coyotes then took control in the sixth inning. Kaiden Smaka started the rally with a double and was driven in by a single from Matthew. Ziroli. Successive hits and a key two-RBI single by Chaz McNelis flipped the game in favor of CSN, capped by Harvey Smerdon's RBI single that scored McNelis.
Diego Evans took the loss for Arizona Western, giving up three runs over 5.2 innings before Gregorys Mateo surrendered the remaining two runs without recording an out in the sixth.
The Coyotes' late offensive outburst was highlighted by multi-hit games from Chaz McNelis and Harvey Smerdon, crucial in sparking the late rally. Defensively, CSN was flawless, not committing any errors, and effectively using double plays to end potential threats by the Matadors.
