HENDERSON, NV (May 3, 2025) — The College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes capped off their four-game ACCAC series with a strong finish, defeating Eastern Arizona College 8-3 on Saturday night at Lady Coyote Field. The victory moved CSN to 26-23 overall and 18-14 in conference play, and secured a split in the weekend series.
Behind a steady offensive attack and a complete-game effort from right-hander Mckenna Cahoon, the Coyotes responded to an early 2-0 deficit with a five-run outburst in the second inning and never looked back. Cahoon scattered 11 hits across seven innings, allowing just three earned runs while striking out two and walking two.
CSN's offense exploded for 13 hits, with eight players contributing to the box score. Camryn Hunkins led the way with a triple and a two-run single as part of a three-RBI performance. Chloe Makinney continued her stellar day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, and a stolen base. Destinee Lopez added two hits, including an RBI double in the fourth and a run-scoring single in the sixth.
After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first, CSN quickly responded. Makinney's RBI single plated Hunkins in the bottom half of the inning, and the Coyotes erupted for four more runs in the second. A three-run triple from Hunkins turned the tide, giving CSN a 5-2 lead that it would not relinquish.
Eastern Arizona scratched across another run in the third, but the Coyotes responded with one run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to keep the visitors at bay. Miken Jacobsen doubled home a run in the fifth and finished with two hits, a walk, and an RBI. Ellie Olson also had a pair of doubles and scored twice in a solid outing from the left field spot.
Defensively, the Coyotes were sharp, playing error-free softball while turning a key double play in the third to erase a scoring threat. Cahoon worked her way out of multiple jams and got big outs when she needed them, including a strikeout to strand two runners in scoring position in the seventh.
Eastern Arizona was led offensively by Gianna Villegas, who went 4-for-4, and Taylor Christensen, who chipped in with two hits and scored a run. Ailani Rodriguez took the loss for the Gila Monsters, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on 13 hits in six innings.
The win concludes the regular season of ACCAC play for the Lady Coyotes, who finish with a 26-23 overall record and 18-14 in conference action. With the victory, CSN secures the No. 2 seed in next week's Region 1 Softball Championships, which will be held in Thatcher, Arizona, and hosted by Eastern Arizona College.
Postseason play begins Friday in the double elimination tournament, with the Region 1 Championship set for Saturday. The Lady Coyotes will look to carry momentum into the tournament as they begin their quest for a berth in the NJCAA Softball World Series.
