YUMA, Ariz. — The College of Southern Nevada women's soccer team ran into a fast start from unbeaten Arizona Western College on Saturday, falling 8-0 to the Matadors in the Lady Coyotes' conference opener.
Arizona Western (5-0-0, 1-0-0) took control early, scoring in the third minute before adding two more goals during the opening 15 minutes. The Matadors carried a 7-0 advantage into halftime before adding their final goal late in the second half.
Giovana Coutinho led the Arizona Western attack with three goals, including the opening score at the 2:28 mark. Isabelly Viana Fernandes, Kanon Ozaki, Ariana Peraza and Jimena Valdovinos also found the net during the first half as the Matadors built their advantage. Kiana Knudson accounted for the lone second-half goal in the 69th minute.
Despite the difficult opening half, Southern Nevada responded with a more competitive second-half performance. The Lady Coyotes held Arizona Western to one goal after the break and generated both of their shots during the final 25 minutes. Savannah Foschetti put CSN's first attempt on target in the 50th minute, while Jazlyn Chavez forced another save in the 64th.
Goalkeeper Madison English faced sustained pressure throughout the match and finished with 15 saves in 70 minutes. Arizona Western totaled 31 shots, while CSN finished with two, both on goal.
The loss moves Southern Nevada to 1-2-2 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play.
