Following its second .500 hundred season in the programs three year existence, the College of Southern Nevada set its sights on postseason success as the fourth seeded Lady Coyotes aimed to shock the soccer world and upset the top-seeded Salt Lake Community College on its home-field. CSN looked to claim its first postseason victory in three seasons as a member of the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Southern Nevada entered Friday afternoon's match with the Bruins 0-3 on the year with a minus ten goal differential in those matches.
CSN found itself trailing almost immediately as Samantha Tippets found the back of the Lady Coyotes net just 6:36 into the opening half of the match.
CSN was able to regain its footing and shut down the SLCC offense the remainder of the opening half, trailing just 1-0 at intermission.
A defensive-minded group of Lady Coyotes were able to turn away multiple Salt Lake scoring opportunities and in the 82
nd minute created a scoring opportunity of their own.
Ashlee Jordan was able to draw a penalty kick in the 82
nd minute of the match, and was able to bury the equalizer, leveling the match 1-1 with just minutes remaining in the second half.
Both sides regrouped enough to hold the other scoreless in two overtimes, setting up penalty kicks to decide the opening match of the 2018 Region XVIII tournament. Much to the dismay of the Southern Nevada faithful, the Bruins were able to hold-off the Coyotes in PK's, surviving the game and advancing to the championship match Saturday afternoon, and eventually winning the Region XVIII Title.
The loss was not only a moral victory for the Lady Coyotes, but a building block and reminder that if they continue to put the right pieces in place it is only a matter of time before the program is competing favorably with the elite teams in the SWAC for conference supremacy.
