Following a 2-2 home stand the Lady Coyotes invaded Yuma, Arizona to compete in the 2018 Great Western Shootout. Southern Nevada would play six games over three days in one of the premier junior college softball tournaments in the country.
A familiar opponent awaited CSN in Thursday's tournament opener as Pima Community College looked to defeat Southern Nevada for the second time in five games. For a second consecutive matchup the Aztecs were able to hold down CSN's offense. The Lady Coyotes produced eight total hits in the contest, but
Tayzha Meyers was the only player with a multi-hit game and first baseman
Daryan Meade was responsible for the teams only RBI of the contest. Pima Community College was able to outlast CSN 5-1, dropping the Lady Coyotes to 2-3 on the season and 0-1 away from home.
Less than one week after doubling up Central Arizona College 16-8 in its second game of the season, CSN looked to drop the Vaqueras for a second time in 2018. Sophomore Tayzha Myers took the ball for CSN, but struggled to consistently locate the ball for strikes. Myers surrendered 14 earned runs over her four innings of work, a deficit that Southern Nevada would not be able to overcome. A five run fourth inning, highlighted by a round tripper off the bat of
Breanna Neveu and RBI's from
Brianna Hernandez and
Sabrina Saldate gave the Lady Coyotes a spark of life, but it was too little too late. Despite pounding out ten hits Southern Nevada was defeated 17-6 by Central Arizona.
The defeat dropped CSN to 2-4 in 2018 and 0-2 on the road.
The Phoenix College Bears awaited the Lady Coyotes to begin day two of the 2018 Great Western Shootout.
The Bears and Coyotes traded runs in the opening inning thanks to an RBI double off the bat of
Katelyn Enzweiler to knot the game up 1-1. Tayzha Myers had a perfect 4-4 day at the dish that included a team-high 2 RBI's, however it was not enough to outscore the Bears. Phoenix College produced six runs and six hits off freshman starting pitcher
Kristie Thomas and held on to extend the Lady Coyotes losing streak to five games.
The Bears doubled up the Lady Coyotes 10-5, dropping them to 0-3 away from the Den and 2-5 overall.
Sophomore
Lindsey Daron entered the circle for CSN in the final game of day two determined to put an end to the teams five game losing streak. Daron pitched arguably her best game of the season, limiting Glendale Community College to five hits and four strikeouts over six shutout innings of work to earn the victory. The Lady Coyote offense came alive behind Lindsey, producing a tournament high six runs on nine hits. A four run third inning highlighted by RBI's off the bats of
Haleigh Olive,
Breanna Neveu,
Haley Kassel and
Justine Tadeo-Corpuz put Southern Nevada ahead for good.
The 808 connection of Tayzha Myers, Kianna Burnett and
Justine Tadeo-Corpuz accounted for six of the team's nine hits.
The victory snapped the teams five game losing streak and improved CSN's overall record to 3-5 and 1-3 in road contests.
The final day of the tournament began with a tough matchup versus the Yavapai College Roughriders.
Tayzha Myers got her second start of the weekend for CSN and the sophomore looked markedly improved in start two of her Lady Coyotes career. Myers allowed five earned runs and eight hits over her four innings of work, but unfortunately her offense was held scoreless all game.
Sabrina Saldate,
Rilee Stookey and
Haleigh Olive were the only Lady Coyotes to produce hits as the team was shutout for the second time in 2018.
Yavapai College shutout Southern Nevada 7-0, dropping CSN to 3-6 overall and 1-4 on the highway.
Game six of this grueling, three day tournament featured the host school Arizona Western College matching up with the College of Southern Nevada.
Offensive inconsistency continued to plague the Lady Coyotes as all four of the team's hits came off the bat of two players,
Kiana Burnett and
Rilee Stookey. Shortstop
Katelyn Enzweiler and
Kiana Burnett finished the contest with a pair of RBI's apiece, but it wasn't enough to keep CSN from getting doubled up in the tournament finale.
The Matadors doubled up the Lady Coyotes 8-4 to drop CSN to 3-7 overall and 1-5 in the 2018 Great Western Shootout.
Fans your Lady Coyotes will be off until March 2
