Following a 2-2 road trip to Price, Utah that saw the teams 18 game winning streak snapped, Southern Nevada returned to Henderson, Nevada looking to remain atop the SWAC standings with the SLCC Bruins invading the "Den."
Matty Mitchell took the ball in the series opener hoping to secure his fourth victory of the season and propel his team to a crucial victory to open the weekend.
Mitchell was a bit inconsistent in the start, surrendering three runs, four walks and five hits over his four frames of work. The Coyotes offense was quiet early, as the Bruins built a 3-0 edge heading into the bottom of the fourth inning.
CSN's bats woke up in the fourth, sending 12 hitters to the plate and scoring eight runs to take a decisive 8-3 edge over Salt Lake.
Hunter Heugly (3 RBI) and
Roger Riley (2 RBI) led the offense while
Beau Capanna, Nick "Chewy" Hernandez and
Joey O'Brien contributed 1 RBI apiece.
Former San Diego State Aztec Jordan Wyke tossed 2.2 innings of relief, but departed the game in the top of the seventh with the tying run on second base.
Alex Tisminezky retired Brady Brook with runners on second and third to secure his fourth save of the season.
CSN held on to defeat SLCC 8-6, improving to 7-2 in SWAC play and 25-6 overall.
Undefeated righty
Ryan McDonald (5-0) was on the bump for game two, seeking to remain undefeated in his first career start versus SLCC.
Ryan tossed a 3 up, 3 down top of the first, but was forced to depart after walking the leadoff hitter in the top of the 2
nd inning due to some cramping in his right arm. Fortunately for Southern Nevada,
Matt Gilbertson was up to the challenge. "Gilby" held the Bruins in check over his seven innings of work, allowing just a pair of runs and striking out half a dozen Bruins.
The dynamic middle-infield duo of
Beau Capanna and
AJ Amelburu combined to produce five hits in eight plate appearances, scoring four runs and generating four runs batted in.
Justin Lutes,
Peyton Koopman,
Joey O'Brien and
Hunter Heugly chipped in with 1 RBI each as the Coyotes dented the scoreboard for ten runs.
Gilbertson improved to 3-0 after CSN dropped SLCC 10-2 in game two of the series.
The victory improved the Coyotes conference mark to 8-2 and its overall record to 26-6.
Southpaw
Nick Rupp got the start in game 3 of the weekend focused on victory number six as well as keeping CSN unbeaten at home in conference play.
Southern Nevada struck for a three spot in the bottom of the second thanks to a pair of RBI's off the bat of
Justin Lutes and a wild pitch that chased home
Beau Capanna.
Salt Lake picked itself up off the mat to even the game up 3-3 thanks to some Payton Freeman yard work in the top of the fifth inning. The Bruins loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the seventh, but the "Swiss Army Knife" came out of the pen to extinguish the rally and keep the game tied.
O'Brien fanned all three batters he faced in the inning, further adding to his legend at CSN. Speaking of legend,
Justin Lutes stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth looking to add to his.
Lutes launched a Jesse Parker heater over the left field wall to walk-off the Bruins in dramatic fashion. Justin accounted for all three of the teams RBI's in the Coyotes dramatic 4-3 victory in game three of the series.
The win improved the Coyotes conference record to 9-2 and its overall mark to 27-6.
The Coyotes smelled blood in the water as an ailing Bruins team looked to regroup in a hurry to avoid the brooms in the series finale.
Fresh off a ten strikeout performance that earned him SWAC pitcher of the week honors,
Buddy Pindel was on the mound hunting his fourth victory of the season.
Pindel was cruising along with three scoreless frames until Dom Fuller connected on a 3-run bomb in the top of the fourth to plate the first runs of the game.
Southern Nevada evened the score in the bottom of the fourth thanks to RBI's off the bats of
Michael Camburn and
Trevor Jackson, but could never breakthrough and gain a lead in the series finale.
Salt Lake scored the final eight runs of the game to secure an 11-3 victory and avoid the series sweep.
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 9-3 in the SWAC and 27-7 overall.
Fans your Coyotes head to Twin Falls, Idaho this weekend to battle the Golden Eagles with first place in the SWAC on the line.
