The 2018 regular season concluded for Southern Nevada this past weekend in Twin Falls, Idaho as they challenged the top team in the SWAC on its home-field ,as the Lady Coyotes found themselves on the road for a third consecutive weekend.
Tayzha Meyers was tasked with holding the 8
th ranked Golden Eagles offense as both teams looked to solidify its positioning for the 2018 Region XVIII tournament. Southern Idaho flexed on the Lady Coyotes all game, launching four long balls in five innings of offense as they touched Meyers up for eight runs. That was more than enough offense for Stefani Zimmerman as she blanked CSN over five innings of work, surrendering just three hits and striking out six Lady Coyotes. CSI blanked CSN 8-0 in the series opener, dropping Southern Nevada to 12-25 in SWAC play and 15-32 overall.
Southern Nevada dusted itself off and began game two with a sense of urgency and determination to claim its first victory over a nationally ranked opponent.
Katelyn Enzweiler got the Lady Coyotes on the board in the top of the first with a 2 RBI double, followed by an RBI groundout off the bat of
Tayzha Meyers to stake them to a 3-0 lead. Enzweiler expanded the lead to 4-0 with her third run batted in of the game in the top of the second inning. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles responded by plating the final 11 runs of the game.
Lindsey Daron and
Kristie Thomas were charged with seven of those eleven runs as CSI found its sixth consecutive victory over CSN. The Golden Eagles outlasted the Lady Coyotes 11-4 in game two, dropping them to 12-26 in conference play and 15-33 overall.
Game three of the weekend was a pitching rematch of the series opener between
Tayzha Meyers for Southern Nevada and Stefani Zimmerman for Southern Idaho. Zimmerman was on point once again, surrendering just four hits over five shutout frames of work. Stefani combined to toss 10 scoreless innings in which she struck out more batters (10) than hits surrendered (7) in a pair of dominant victories. The Golden Eagles were once again aided by the long ball, depositing four round trippers over the fence in the 8-0 shutout victory. The loss dropped the Lady Coyotes to 12-27 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play and 15-34 overall.
The regular season finale for both teams featured a CSI team that needed just one victory to secure a SWAC regular season title, and with it the privilege to host the 2018 Region XVIII tournament. Southern Idaho played like a team possessed from the opening pitch, plating ten runs in the team's first two appearances at the plate. Riley Stookey plated
Avery Rayos and
Jessica Garcia in the top of the fourth inning, however it was too little too late for CSN. CSI plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the 12-2 victory, and with it a 2018 Scenic West Athletic Conference regular season crown.
The loss dropped the Lady Coyotes to 12-28 in conference and 15-35 overall.
