HENDERSON, Nev. (March 29, 2019) - Home-field advantage came to the benefit of the College of Southern Nevada softball team on Friday.
The Lady Coyotes earned a split in Friday's doubleheader, picking up a 7-5 win in game one before falling 13-0 in game two. The split puts CSN's overall record at 8-17 overall and 6-8 in Scenic West Athletic Conference play.
The Coyotes and Bruins will play another doubleheader on Saturday to finish the series. The first game Saturday is scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start at Lady Coyotes Softball Field.
Southern Nevada 7, Salt Lake 5: A
Haley Kassel grand-slam home run lifted CSN to the impressive game-one victory over the NJCAA's ninth-ranked team.
It was Salt Lake who took a 4-0 lead midway through the first game, with Brook Carter throwing a sterling game for Salt Lake. Kassel's double in the third inning was the first Southern Nevada hit, opening the floodgates that ended in a 4-4 tie after the grand slam in the fourth inning.
The Lady Coyotes powered ahead on a wild-pitch in the fifth inning, earning a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Kassel finished 2-of-2 at the plate.
Breanna Alvarez earned the victory, allowing three hits and one earned run.
Salt Lake 13, Southern Nevada 0: SLCC scored early-and-often in a Bruins romp.
Salt Lake scored five runs in both the second and third innings to take an early lead they never relinquished. Southern Nevada posted just three hits in the game.
Kassel and Alvarez both posted hits in the game, going 1-of-2.
