HENDERSON, Nev. (April 19, 2019) – A sharply-played afternoon ended in the College of Southern Nevada softball team earning a doubleheader sweep Friday at Colorado Northwestern.
The Coyotes picked up a 16-3 run-rule victory in game one of a Scenic West Athletic Conference series, also earning a 10-8 victory in game two. The wins lift CSN's overall record to 13-24 and 11-15 in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.
Southern Nevada and Colorado Northwestern will play another doubleheader on Saturday. The games will begin at 12:00 p.m. MDT.
Southern Nevada 16, Colorado Northwestern 3: A big third-inning powered CSN to the victory in the series opener.
The Coyotes scored six runs in the third inning, adding to an already impressive 6-0 lead. CSN mustered 11 hits in the game, posting four extra-base hits including a
Bailey Pepper home run.
It was an impressive statistical day for several Southern Nevada players but Pepper's performance stood out. She went 3-of-4 at the plate, finishing with 5 RBI's in the game. Both
Alyssa Trujillo and
Breanna Alvarez went 2-of-3.
On top of her strong hitting performance, Alvarez had a masterful day in the circle pitching as she had a complete-game victory that featured only one earned run and just four hits. She also struck out two CNCC batters.
Southern Nevada 10, Colorado Northwestern 8: An incredible seventh-inning helped stretch the Coyotes across the finish line for the win.
Trailing 8-2 entering the top of the seventh inning, Southern Nevada posted an eight-run inning that helped them grab the lead for the first time since early in the game. CSN grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second inning before Colorado Northwestern posted seven-unanswered runs to take the commanding lead.
Both
Elise Bush and
Haley Kassel had home runs in the victory, helping Southern Nevada up its winning streak to four-straight games.
Bailey Pepper continued her hot-hitting ways, going 3-of-3 at the plate.
In a game where pitching was at a premium,
Karen Hernandez earned the win in relief. Hernandez threw four innings and allowed just one run and three hits while striking out five batters.
