HENDERSON, Nev. (May 3, 2019) – The No. 8 College of Southern Nevada baseball team knew their task entering the final Scenic West regular-season series against No. 19 Salt Lake Community College – go 3-1 and host next week's Region 18 championships.
The Coyotes were successful in inching their way towards those three wins, earning a 10-7 win in game one before falling 5-4 in game two. In order to clinch the Scenic West regular-season title, Southern Nevada now has to sweep Saturday's doubleheader.
Southern Nevada and Salt Lake will conclude the series on Saturday with another doubleheader at Morse Stadium. The games are scheduled for a 12:00 p.m. start with festivities before the game to celebrate CSN's sophomores. Live stats and live stream for the games will be available at csncoyotes.com.
Southern Nevada 10, Salt Lake 7: A strong start helped CSN pick up an early advantage and momentum they would use in a comeback win over Salt Lake.
The Coyotes scored a pair of runs in the second inning, using a
Nick Hernandez single to get on the board. While Salt Lake would take a 6-2 lead in the following innings, the Coyotes responding by posting a seven-run fifth inning to take the lead for good. First,
Steven Rivas had an RBI single to open up the momentum for the Coyotes, followed up by another Hernandez RBI single.
In a fifth inning that didn't feature any RBI extra-base hits,
AJ Amelburu had an RBI walk, followed up by a
Roger Riley RBI single. CSN even scored runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the fifth.
Salt Lake came back to score in the sixth inning but the run was quickly equaled by Southern Nevada as Hernandez picked up his third single of the day.
Hernandez finished going 3-of-4 at the plate, with Riley and Rivas both picking up a pair of hits. CSN pitcher
Matt Gilbertson picked up the win, throwing five innings of five-run ball while striking out five.
Chase Bauerle earned the save.
Salt Lake 5, Southern Nevada 4: A late rally helped the Bruins earn a split of Friday's doubleheader.
CSN and SLCC traded runs early, with
Cole Schaefer's RBI single in the third inning getting Southern Nevada on the board. Salt Lake build their lead up to 4-1 in the eighth inning before
Steven Rivas hit a solo home run to right-center field, followed up by Schaefer hitting a two-run single to tie the game at 4-4 in the ninth inning. In extra innings, it was SLCC who had a key RBI to earn the victory.
Schaefer finished the game going 2-of-3 at the plate, with Rivas going 2-of-5.
Nick Rupp started the game for CSN, going seven innings while surrendering just a pair of earned runs.
