HENDERSON, Nev. (January 31, 2020) – The No. 12 College of Southern Nevada baseball team responded from a tough start to the 'Manny Guerra Memorial Coyote Border Battle' on Thursday with a strong performance on Friday.
The Coyotes earned a 10-2 victory over Gateway Community College, followed up by a 7-3 loss to Arizona Western College. The two wins boost CSN's overall record to 2-4.
Southern Nevada will play a single game on Saturday, facing off against a to-be-decided opponent at either 10:00 a.m. or 1:30 p.m.
Southern Nevada 10, Gateway 2: CSN jumped out to an early lead, picking up the win in the first game of a Friday doubleheader.
A
Tony Sortino RBI single helped the Coyotes post an early 1-0 lead, followed up by a
Joseph Walls RBI triple and a
Peyton McGregor two-run home run to give CSN a 4-0 lead after the third inning. Sortino also hit a two-run double in the fourth inning. A
Jack Pineda RBI triple keyed Southern Nevada's 4-run fifth inning.
Johnny Cuevas earned the pitching victory, throwing 4.2 innings of no-run ball. He struck out 8 opposing batters while allowing just one hit. Sortino led the team offensive, going 2-of-3 at the plate.
Arizona Western 7, Southern Nevada 3: An early Southern Nevada lead wasn't able to withstand one big inning by Arizona Western.
The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead as
Jack Pineda hit a solo home run to give CSN a 1-0 lead in the first inning. CSN would up the lead to 2-1 in the third inning after a Pineda RBI single. From there though, Arizona Western posted 6 runs in the fifth inning to clinch a commanding lead. CSN loaded the bases, trailing by four runs, but stranded the runners to end the game.
Pineda and
DJ Stephens both finished 2-of-4 at the plate.
