HENDERSON, Nev. (January 31, 2020) – The College of Southern Nevada softball team had a day of strong results in their own 'CSN Kickoff Classic – Presented by Fiesta Henderson Hotel and Casino'.
The Lady Coyotes earned an 8-4 win over Central Arizona to open their day, followed up with an 8-0 win against Northwest Kansas Technical College. CSN picked up a 7-3 win in the nightcap against Eastern Arizona College. CSN's overall record is now 3-2 after the day's results.
Southern Nevada will play Jones College at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Lady Coyote Softball Field.
Southern Nevada 8, Central Arizona 4: A
Brianna Benoit grand slam helped propel CSN to victory in the day's opener.
Trailing 1-0 in the third inning, Benoit connected on a home-run to left field, opening up a 4-1 CSN lead. The Lady Coyotes added to the margin with an
Alexis Vigil RBi single in the fourth inning, followed up by a
Bailey Pepper two-run single.
Alyssa Trujillo had an RBI walk in the fifth inning.
Benoit was 1-of-4 in the game with the 4 RBI's. Vigil finished at 2-of-3 on the game. CSN's
Karen Hernandez pitched a complete game, striking out 5 batters in the win.
Southern Nevada 8, Northwest Kansas Technical 0: A
Chasity McKean home run opened the floodgates for the Lady Coyotes in game two.
McKean hit a solo home run in the first inning, setting up a run of runs that also featured an
Alexis Vigil RBI triple and a
Kiana Young RBI double. All those runs stretched into a 5-0 CSN lead at the end of the first inning. Caitlin Liveri's two-run single in the second inning served as a knockout blow to the Mustangs.
Mayu Nishijima went 3-of-3 in the game, scoring a pair of runs. Tyana Kaailali earned the win in the complete-game performance, striking out 9 NKTC players.
Southern Nevada 7, Eastern Arizona 3: Extra-base hits and overall momentum helped CSN to a victory in the nightcap of its three-game day.
Southern Nevada scored three runs immediately in the first inning, extending the run further on an
Alyssa Trujillo home run in the third inning to give CSN a 4-0 lead. Eastern Arizona would come back, with the Lady Coyotes turning a critical double play in the sixth inning to maintain a 4-2 lead. CSN would eventually post three runs in the sixth inning to take final control of the game.
