HENDERSON, Nev. (February 7, 2020) – The College of Southern Nevada softball team played strong in the second day of an Arizona-based tournament.
Playing in the 'Great Western Shootout' in Yuma, Ariz., the Lady Coyotes earned an 8-7 win against Chandler-Gilbert Community College and then a 6-3 win in a game with Gateway Community College. CSN ended the day with a 9-1 loss against host Arizona Western. The day's results set CSN's overall record at 7-4.
Southern Nevada will next play in a doubleheader against Phoenix College on Feb. 20.
Southern Nevada 8, Chandler-Gilbert 7: A five-run inning helped CSN earn the win in game one of the day.
Scoreless entering the fourth inning, Southern Nevada scored five runs while using small-ball to score three runs on an error and two bunt singles. Chandler-Gilbert tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth inning.
Chasity McKean broke the tie on a sacrifice-fly RBI, with
Liliana Gutierrez hitting an RBI single to add to the advantage. Gutierrez also scored a pair of runs at the plate, with
Mayu Nishijima and
Brianna Benoit both going 2-of-4 at the plate.
Southern Nevada 6, Gateway 3: A
Chasity McKean double in the second inning propelled CSN to the second-game win.
Southern Nevada jumped out to a 5-0 win through the third inning, with a
Madelynn Kennedy RBI single. McKean also picked up another RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Alyssa Trujillo went 2-of-3 at the plate in the game, with McKean posting a pair of RBI's.
Tyanna Kaailaii picked up the pitching win, surrendering three earned runs while striking out four.
Arizona Western 9, Southern Nevada 1: An extended rally helped Arizona Western earn the win.
