HENDERSON, Nev. (January 28, 2021) – Opening Day finally came for the College of Southern Nevada softball team Thursday, with the Lady Coyotes hosting a group of teams for the annual 'CSN Kickoff Classic'.
Southern Nevada suffered two losses in the day of action, falling 9-1 to Arizona Western in game one, followed by an 18-10 loss to Scenic West Athletic Conference rival Snow College in a non-conference game. The losses open CSN's overall record at 0-2 after the first day of the tourney at Lady Coyote Softball Field.
CSN will play a single game on Friday, facing off against Snow College at 10:00 a.m.
Arizona Western 9, Southern Nevada 1: A trio of early runs helped Arizona Western power to the win.
AWC posted three runs in the first inning, followed by five more runs in the fifth inning to power to the run-rule victory. Southern Nevada got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Kendall Menk scoring on a Hannah Meari RBI single. Meari finished 1-of-2 with an RBI in the game.
Snow 18, Southern Nevada 10: A hot start for CSN gave way to a late Snow College run in Southern Nevada's second game.
The Lady Coyotes scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning, with CSN scoring four runs on walks after loading the bases. With the bases still loaded,
Kayley Cole hit a two-run single to up the lead to 6-1 after the inning. Snow came back to cut the deficit to 6-4, follow up by Mayu Nishiji scoring in the fourth inning for CSN and
Bailey Pepper hitting an RBI single to score Cole.
Unfortunately, Snow scored four runs in the sixth inning and never looked back in the win. Nishji led CSN with a 3-of-4 performance at the plate, finishing with an RBI. Amber Trivis finished with no-decision in the pitching start.
