CSN Softball splits Sunday finale

HENDERSON, Nev. (February 21, 2021) - The College of Southern Nevada softball team earned a split in a preseason tournament doubleheader finale on Sunday.

CSN earned a strong 5-2 win over Southern Idaho to open Sunday play in the 'SWAC Preseason Tourney', while falling 19-7 to No. 6 Salt Lake. The day's split levels Southern Nevada's overall record at 6-9.

Southern Nevada will close the preseason with a 'Coyote Round Robin' tournament next weekend.

Southern Nevada 5, Southern Idaho 2: An early deficit turned into a strong win for CSN to open Sunday play.

After Southern Idaho took an early 2-0 lead, the Lady Coyotes rallied to five runs in the fifth inning to take a runaway lead. Kiana Young hit an RBI single to start the rally, while Caitlin Covington hit a two-run double to up the lead. Two CSN runs scored later on a Southern Idaho fielding error.

Madelynn Kennedy finished with a 2-of-3 performance at the plate. Serenity Jac pitched a complete game victory, throwing seven innings and striking out five CSI hitters.

Salt Lake 19, Southern Nevada 7: In a flip of the script from game one, CSN's early lead evaporated as the Salt Lake offense turned on and rolled to a win in the day's second game.

CSN started hot, with Kayley Cole scoring the game's first run on a Bailey Pepper RBI, while Jocelyn Shupp hit a two-RBI single to lead CSN to a 3-0 lead. From there, Salt Lake scored 15 unanswered runs. Southern Nevada responded with three runs in the fourth inning, with a Covington two-RBI double keying the late rally.

Kendall Menke went 3-of-4 at the plate for Southern Nevada, while Shupp went 2-of-3. CSN hit five doubles in the game.
