HENDERSON, Nev. (February 26, 2021) – The College of Southern Nevada softball team opened a home tournament with a strong doubleheader sweep.
The Lady Coyotes earned a pair of wins in the opening day of play, downing Eastern Arizona, 3-2, before earning a 15-11 win over Arizona Western College to close the day. The victories boost Southern Nevada to 8-9 overall.
CSN will close the tourney with another doubleheader Saturday, facing off against Arizona Western and Eastern Arizona in a back-to-back that starts at 8:00 a.m. at Lady Coyote Softball Field.
Southern Nevada 3, Eastern Arizona 2: Caitlin Covington starred in a strong win to open the day for Southern Nevada.
Covington had an RBI single in the first inning to give CSN an early lead, following up with a two-run home run in the third inning to boost CSN's win to 3-0. Eastern Arizona scored a pair of late runs but the effort proved to be too little, too late.
Covington led Southern Nevada with a 2-of-3 performance at the plate, finishing with a trio of RBI's.
Amber Triviso earned the pitching win for the Lady Coyotes, throwing seven innings while striking out two EAC hitters.
Southern Nevada 15, No. 6 Arizona Western 11: The Lady Coyotes earned a strong win over a nationally-ranked foe, scoring in every inning of the win.
Arizona Western opened up with an early 3-0 lead before CSN added a series of runs, taking the lead on a
Caitlin Covington sacrifice-fly RBI in the second inning. The two teams would trade the leads back-and-forth, with
Kayley Cole hitting a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 9-78 in the fourth inning.
Covington hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to help CSN reclaim the lead.
Bailey Pepper added a home run in the fifth inning to up the CSN lead to 13-11, while
Kayley Cole hit a two-run triple to cement the victory.
Liliana Gutierrez went 3-of-4 at the plate, while Covington led the team with five RBI's.
Serenity Jackson earned the pitching win, throwing five innings.
