HENDERSON, Nev. (May 13, 2021) - The College of Southern Nevada baseball team opened the Region 18 tournament as host Thursday, falling in a close game.
CSN lost a 5-4 decision to Southern Idaho, dropping the Coyotes into the one-loss portion of the double-elimination bracket. Southern Nevada is now scheduled to play a 3:30 p.m. elimination game on Friday against USU Eastern, needing to win two elimination games to advance to Saturday's championship finals.
In a game that was light on offense, Southern Idaho scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to set an early tone. CSN responded with a two-run double from
John-Howard Bobo in the bottom of the inning to cut the deficit to 3-2, but a two-run CSI single in the fifth inning provided additional insurance for the Golden Eagles.
Southern Nevada's
Justin Olson hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, with
Colby Smith getting a groundout RBI in the eighth inning. Olson was a team-best 2-of-4 at the plate in the win.
Johnny Cuevas took the loss on the pitching mound, finishing with seven strikeouts.
With the win, Southern Idaho advanced to face Salt Lake in a winners' bracket semifinal at 12:00 p.m. at Morse Stadium.
