HENDERSON, Nev. (January 28, 2022) – Nothing makes Opening Day better than winning.
The No. 14 College of Southern Nevada Baseball team experienced that very feeling Friday, earning a 9-8 win over Arizona Western to open the 'Manny Guerra Memorial Coyote Border Battle Presented by Sunset Station Hotel and Casino'. With the win, CSN is now 1-0 to start the young season, coming off a 2021 season that saw the Coyotes earn a Scenic West title and advance into the NJCAA regionals.
It took Southern Nevada all nine innings to close out this instant class, with the Bruins posting seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to come away with the win.
Gavin Amelburu had a two-RBI single in the first inning to give CSN its first runs of the season.
Arizona Western went on to score six runs in the seventh inning to take a 7-2 lead, prior to CSN posting a strong comeback.
Trey Frahm opened the scoring with an RBI walk, followed up by CSN scoring unearned runs. A
Gavin Malcolm bunt plated two runs for the Coyotes, giving them a lead they would not surrender.
Amelburu posted a team-high three RBI's in the win.
Brennen Holligan earned the pitching win in relief, throwing a scoreless inning that saw three strikeouts.
Southern Nevada will play a doubleheader with No. 2 Central Arizona on Saturday at Morse Stadium. The first game will start at 4:00 p.m.
