Baseball: After another strong performance on the road last week, the Coyotes will return home to Morse Stadium for a four-game series this weekend against USU Eastern.
Southern Nevada went 3-1 in its series last weekend at Colorado Northwestern and has won its last three Scenic West series. Now CSN welcomes a USU Eastern team that is just 6-8 in Scenic West games, sitting at fourth in the league standings after getting swept by No. 16 Salt Lake Community College.
In spite of USU Eastern's recent struggles, Coyotes coach
Nick Garritano said the Eagles will provide a strong challenge for his CSN squad.
"USU Eastern has a ton of pitching," he said. "(Their coaching staff) has done an amazing job recruiting up there and their product on the field is showing it. This will be a very big challenge for our hitters this week as we will see really good arms. I anticipate four very well pitched games this weekend. Defense and two-out hitting will be the difference in winning and losing this series."
After opening the season with a sweep at Salt Lake, CSN has picked up its play over the past few weeks, lifting the Coyotes into second place in the league standings. In Garritano's eyes, it is all about his team's focus on continual improvement.
"The goal for us this year, and every year, is to continually improve each-and-every day," he said. "We will and have had minor setbacks along the way but I believe we are moving in the right direction. Our biggest obstacle is looking right back at us in the mirror. We must stay out of own way at times in every phase of the game."
CSN will open the four-game series at USU Eastern on Thursday.
Softball: After a tough series against Salt Lake Community College last weekend, the Lady Coyotes will look to reclaim their momentum in a four-game road series at USU Eastern.
CSN and SLCC were both tied for second place in the Scenic West standings, prior to Southern Nevada going just 1-3 in the series. They travel to face a USU Eastern team that is now in fifth place in the league.
Lady Coyotes coach
Ashley Johnston said her team is looking for a hard reset in the USU Eastern series.
"We know it's always tough to win on the road, but it's a challenge that we must accept and conquer this weekend," she said. "Our team is ready to fight and work our way back to second place in the Scenic West standings. Both teams are swinging a hot bat right now, so our pitching will have to dominate this weekend."
Johnston noted how her team is a resilient group.
"Our team goals remain the same, as we want to finish in the top three teams in the conference," she said. "We battled for secondplace this weekend and came up short. We know that we must go to USU Eastern and win all four games. When we don't take care of business at hand, it puts us in those situations to have to come up big. I have no doubt this team can do anything when they put their mind and drive to it."
CSN and USU Eastern will play doubleheaders on both Friday and Saturday.
