SEASON PREVIEW: CSN Baseball focused on responding to 2023 season

HENDERSON, Nev. (January 24, 2023) – The expectations for the College of Southern Nevada Baseball team are high, sometimes ridiculously high.

CSN is used to competing for national championships, which made 2022's 36-22 record a bit of a disappointment. The Coyotes fell short in the Region 18 tournament, falling to Southern Idaho in an elimination game that put a punctuation mark on an interesting season.

Looking ahead to 2023, Southern Nevada coach Nick Garritano said his team's offseason approach made a significant difference.

"The commitment to the 'team first' attitude has been amazing," he said. "We have a phrase we use at the end of each practice and that is 'team first, team last'. It's always about the front of the jersey that represents the team. The eight returners we have back are looking forward to a great season."

CSN's preseason camp is always difficult and demanding, featuring a mixture of physical conditioning, baseball intelligence training, and team building activities. Through it all, Garritano said training is all about competition.

"The number one thing is getting them back into baseball shape," he stated. "The team did a great job over the break with their strength training and physicality. Getting the body back into the baseball activity for several hours straight takes a little time. We have done a really nice job of challenging hitters this camp and pounding the zone."

All of the situations and offseason training do more than build physical strength; it brings unity and a shared purpose. That sharing should make an extensive difference at Southern Nevada continues throughout the season, according to Garritano.

"We have spent a lot of time on the field," he said. "This club respects each other. It's fun to watch."

When taking inventory of the year ahead, Garritano said it will be important for the team to focus on both the big-and-small pictures.

"The long-term goal is the same for every team in the country; win the national championship," she said. "There are obviously many other short-term goals that you set along the way. We have many smaller internal competitive goals we have within each phase of the game that we believe if we attain those short-term, daily goals it will give us a great chance to be successful each game."
