HENDERSON, Nev. (January 28, 2023) – A doubleheader in the 'Manny Guerra Memorial Coyote Border Battle – Presented by Johnny Mac's Bar and Grill' featured a pair of strong performances for the College of Southern Nevada Baseball team.
In day two of the tournament, Southern Nevada finished a two-game set with No. 1 Central Arizona, earning an 8-1 win. CSN then posted a 16-6 victory over Arizona Western in the night cap. The Coyotes are now 3-0 overall.
Southern Nevada will close the tournament on Sunday, playing Arizona Western at 1:00 p.m. at Morse Stadium.
Southern Nevada 8, Central Arizona 1: For the second straight day, the Coyotes upset the top-ranked team in the NJCAA.
Nick Garritano hit an RBI single in the second inning to jumpstart CSN, then the Coyotes kept adding runs with timely base hits.
Jackson Castillo hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Castillo went 2-of-3 in the game, posting a trio of RBI's to lead Southern Nevada.
Josh Johnson earned the pitching win, throwing five innings and finishing with four strikeouts.
Southern Nevada 16, Arizona Western 6: CSN was dominant in a run-rule victory.
Jack Hale hit a grand-slam home run in the fourth inning, providing an acute example of a humming CSN offense. Hale also had a pair of RBI singles in the second-and-third innings. Southern Nevada had 12 hits in the win.
Hale finished 3-of-3 at the plate, posting six RBI's.
Jesus Gonzalez earned the pitching win, posting six strikeouts in four innings.
