CSN Baseball plays well in South Mountain doubleheader

HENDERSON, Nev. (February 10, 2023) - After a strong start to the season in preseason tournaments, the College of Southern Nevada Baseball team returned home Friday to open a four-game series with South Mountain Community College.

CSN earned wins of 11-10 and 11-4 over South Mountain to open the series, moving to 8-2 overall. Southern Nevada is also undefeated at Morse Stadium so far this year, opening at 6-0.

The Coyotes will play another doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 11:00 a.m.

Southern Nevada 11, South Mountain 10: One of the most exciting plays in baseball happened in one of the most unusual ways to open the SMCC series.

Tied at 10-10 in the eighth inning, CSN earned a walk-off win over SMCC thanks to a game-winning balk that walked home Austin Cates. In a game that featured 18 combined hits, Southern Nevada scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to keep the game alive, scoring the tying run on a Nick Garritano RBI single.

Garritano, Cates and Hunter Katschke all went 2-of-4 at the plate, with Katschke having a home run and a triple. Evan Bunevich earned the pitching win in relief.

Southern Nevada 11, South Mountain 4: Early hitting powered the Coyotes to the doubleheader sweep.

Jack Hale hit a two-run triple in the second inning to put CSN on the board, then the Coyotes scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never relinquish. Garrison Geis had an RBI triple in the sixth inning.

Austin Cates and Mikey Cruz, Jr., finished 2-of-3 at the plate. Josh Johnson threw four strikeouts in a no-decision start, while Ethan O'Neal earned the win in relief.
