HENDERSON, Nev. (March 31, 2023) – A Scenic West Athletic Conference series on short rest ended in a split for the Southern Nevada Softball team.
Just three days after hosting Salt Lake Community College, the Lady Coyotes hosted USU Eastern in a Friday doubleheader, splitting back-and-forth decisions with a 4-3 win and a 9-8 loss. The day's decision gives CSN a 16-16 overall record and a mark of 8-10 in Scenic West play.
Southern Nevada and USU Eastern will play again Saturday, with the doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m. at Lady Coyote Softball Field.
Southern Nevada 4, USU Eastern 3: A back-and-forth affair ended in a walkoff win for the Lady Coyotes to open the series.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning,
Mia Elicerio hit a two-run single to give Southern Nevada the win.
Caitlin Covington got CSN on the board in the third inning, hitting a solo home run to tie the game. Wendy Van-Wiljk added an RBI single in the fourth inning to give the Lady Coyotes a 2-1 lead.
Covington went 2-of-3 in the win.
Taylor Hendricks also went 2-of-2.
Laynee Anzalone threw a complete game, striking out seven USU Eastern batters.
USU Eastern 9, Southern Nevada 8: A strong start by CSN did not hold up.
Caitlin Covington hit a three-run home run in the first inning to jump start Southern Nevada's attack, with
Hannah Mearideth adding an RBI single. Wendy Van-Wiljk then added a solo home run in the third inning to boost CSN to a 6-0 lead.
USU Eastern then came back to claim a lead it would not surrender, in spite of a late CSN comeback.
Kylie Sharapan did have an RBI single in the seventh inning but it proved to be too little, too late.
Taylor Hendricks went 2-of-3 in the loss.
Laynee Anzalone was the losing pitcher, throwing five strikeouts.
