North Las Vegas, NV – The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) women's soccer team endured a difficult day on the pitch, falling 6-1 to Eastern Arizona College on September 17, 2024, at the Cheyenne Sports Complex. The Coyotes, now 2-2-0 in conference play and 3-3-0 overall, struggled to keep up with a potent Eastern Arizona attack, which improved to 1-2-0 in conference and 5-2-0 overall.
Eastern Arizona wasted no time asserting themselves, scoring their first goal just three minutes into the match. Nao Yasuda opened the scoring, capitalizing on a well-placed assist from Maddie Haslam to put the visitors ahead. This early goal set the tone for the match, as Eastern Arizona's offense continued to apply pressure throughout the first half.
CSN's defense held firm for the next 20 minutes but was eventually overwhelmed by a flurry of goals from Eastern Arizona. Maria Dantas Coelho doubled the lead in the 24th minute, followed closely by a third goal from Andrea Perez just a minute later. With CSN struggling to mount a counter-attack, Eastern Arizona extended their lead further just before halftime, with Kylee Holt scoring off a dual assist from Haslam and LeiLani Hamblin to make it 4-0 at the break.
Despite a tough first half, CSN came out with renewed energy after halftime. The Coyotes finally found a breakthrough in the 71st minute, when forward Siara Alvarez scored off an assist from midfielder Melinda Bravo-Avendano, giving the home side a glimmer of hope. Alvarez, who had been one of the bright spots for CSN, finished with three shots on target.
However, Eastern Arizona quickly regained control of the match. Maddie Haslam, who had already been instrumental with two assists, added a goal of her own in the 58th minute to widen the gap to 5-0. Kayme Smith sealed the victory for Eastern Arizona with a goal in the 85th minute, assisted by Yasuda, capping off a dominant performance.
CSN goalkeeper Nezza Ahumada faced an onslaught of shots throughout the match, making four saves but ultimately unable to stem the tide of Eastern Arizona's relentless attack. CSN finished with nine shots, four of which were on target, but struggled to create consistent scoring opportunities. Alvarez was the standout performer for CSN, scoring the team's lone goal and pushing the attack when possible.
The Coyotes will need to regroup quickly as they face crucial upcoming matches in their conference campaign. With several strong performances under their belt this season, CSN remains hopeful of bouncing back and making a run for a higher spot in the standings.
