North Las Vegas, NV – The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) women's soccer team put up a tough fight but ultimately fell to Cochise College 3-1 on September 28, 2024, at the Cheyenne Sports Complex. The Coyotes' record now stands at 2-4-0 in conference play (3-5-0 overall), while Cochise improves to 3-1-1 in conference (6-2-2 overall).
The match started with Cochise College asserting early dominance, capitalizing on their offensive opportunities. Jocelyn Navarro opened the scoring for Cochise in the 9th minute with a clinical finish, assisted by Darienne Thompson. CSN responded with intensity, but Cochise's defense, anchored by goalkeeper Alicia Garwood, held firm.
As the first half progressed, the Coyotes pressed for an equalizer and were rewarded in the 40th minute when Jenna Garcia scored a vital goal, assisted by midfielder Melinda Bravo-Avendano. Garcia's goal gave CSN hope heading into halftime with the score level at 1-1.
However, Cochise College regained control in the second half. In the 70th minute, Darienne Thompson scored what proved to be the game-winner with an assist from Michelle Gomez, giving Cochise a 2-1 lead. Despite several chances from CSN, including a close effort by Nathaly Perez-Rodriguez in the 77th minute, the Coyotes couldn't find the back of the net.
Cochise sealed the victory in the 89th minute when Sabrina Amezcua scored her team's third goal, assisted by Navarro. The late goal put the game out of reach for CSN, despite their efforts to get back into the match.
CSN's goalkeeper, Nezza Ahumada, was busy throughout the game, making eight crucial saves to keep her team in the contest. The Coyotes finished the match with 15 shots, 6 of which were on target, but they struggled to break through Garwood's strong performance in goal for Cochise.
