Coyotes Edge Dawgs 3-1 to Extend Winning Streak in Tense Pitchers' Duel

Story Links

HENDERSON, NV — The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes continued their dominant start to the season, clinching a 3-1 victory over the Prairie Baseball Academy Dawgs in the second game of their four-game series at Morse Stadium. With this win, the Coyotes improved their record to 13-3.

The game was a classic pitcher's battle, with both teams displaying strong performances on the mound. Evan Festa earned his first win of the season with a standout two-inning relief effort, striking out four and allowing no runs. Andrew Kaplan secured his fifth save in a tense finish, preserving the lead by navigating through some high-pressure situations unscathed.

The Coyotes took the lead in the second inning, capitalizing on a series of Prairie mistakes and timely hitting. Matthew Ziroli's double set up the first run, followed by Jack Wheatley's RBI single that brought Ziroli home. The inning continued with Jake Gorrell driving in another run with a single, and Alex Rhynes adding an RBI single to solidify the Coyotes' early lead.

On the mound for Prairie, Jake Maniago took the loss despite a solid six-inning effort where he allowed three runs on six hits, striking out seven. His single error contributed to the challenging second inning but he settled in to hold CSN scoreless for the rest of his outing.

The Dawgs' offense struggled to capitalize on their opportunities, managing only three hits and one unearned run against a tight Coyotes' defense that executed two double plays. Tetsu Nishida scored the lone run for the Dawgs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of a wild pitch after reaching base on an error.

The series continues with the Coyotes looking to extend their lead and the Dawgs aiming to bounce back and split the remaining games.

This victory not only underscores the Coyotes' strong start to the season but also highlights their ability to win tightly contested games, a valuable trait as they look forward to postseason aspirations.
