HENDERSON, NV — The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes narrowly secured a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Northwestern Community College Spartans in the third game of their series, held at Morse Stadium. This win boosts the Coyotes' impressive season record to 21-3.
Chase Frey earned his fifth win of the season, striking out five in two innings despite allowing two runs early, including a two-run homer by Javier Gaeta that momentarily put the Spartans ahead in the first inning. Kody Bialas notched his first save with a clean final inning, helping CSN to stave off any late rally attempts by CNCC.
The Coyotes responded quickly to the Spartans' early surge with three runs in the bottom of the first. Chaz McNelis ignited the rally with a leadoff single, stealing second and then third, setting the stage for subsequent hits from Anthony Marnell IV and Roy Durham, who each contributed RBIs. Tyler Garritano's sacrifice fly brought in the go-ahead run.
Despite the early burst of runs, both teams settled into a pitcher's duel with CSN's bullpen combining for five scoreless innings, allowing only two hits and striking out six. The Spartan's pitcher Brent Holdren, despite the loss, pitched a complete game, allowing three earned runs on five hits and three walks.
The game was tightly contested, with neither side giving up much ground after the first inning. CNCC managed to place runners in scoring positions several times but failed to capitalize on these opportunities, largely due to CSN's effective pitching and solid defensive plays.
As the series moves into its final game tomorrow at 11:00 AM, the Coyotes look to complete a sweep and continue their dominant performance this season. Today's close contest demonstrates the team's ability to hold onto slim leads and pull through in tightly contested matchups, a valuable trait as they progress through the season.
