Yuma, AZ - In a dramatic face-off in ACCAC conference play, the College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes edged out the Arizona Western College Matadors with a 5-3 victory in game two of their four-game series. This win pushes the Lady Coyotes to an undefeated 10-0 in conference play and 14-9 overall for the season.
The game unfolded with intense competition as both teams struggled to dominate early on, leaving the scoreboard untouched until the third inning. CSN's offensive breakthrough was sparked by Jimena Barraza-Caro and Destinee Lopez, who collectively drove in three runs to shift the momentum. Barraza-Caro's keen eye at the plate earned her a walk, setting the stage for her steal and later scoring on Lopez's crucial double. Lopez, showcasing her clutch hitting, brought home two more runs to cap off the inning.
Despite out-hitting the Lady Coyotes with 10 hits to 7, the Matadors could not capitalize as effectively, largely due to their defensive missteps that resulted in five costly errors. Kris Corral stood out for AWC with a stellar performance at the bat, hitting a double and a triple, yet even his efforts couldn't turn the tide in favor of the Matadors.
Pitching was pivotal in CSN's win, with Bryn Connors clinching the win. Entering in relief of starter London Lamb, Connors pitched four and a third solid innings, giving up just one earned run and fending off the Matadors' late-game attempts to rally. Her poise under pressure ensured CSN maintained their lead through the critical final innings.
The Matadors' Lili Vigil German endured a challenging outing, absorbing the loss while striking out only one batter across seven innings. Her performance was marred by two errors of her own, contributing to her team's overall defensive struggles.
The Lady Coyotes' resilience was on full display as they navigated through Arizona Western's attempts to claw back into the game. Key defensive plays and strategic base running helped secure their lead and eventual victory, leaving them in a strong position to continue their dominance in the ACCAC.
With two more games left in the series, the Lady Coyotes look poised to maintain their perfect conference record, while the Matadors will undoubtedly seek to rebound and split the series. The next games in the series are anticipated to be just as competitive, as both teams vie for crucial late-season victories.
