Yuma, AZ - The College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes faced their first ACCAC conference defeat this season, falling 6-2 to the Arizona Western College Matadors in the final game of their four-game series in Yuma, Arizona. Despite the loss, CSN still holds a strong season record of 15-10 overall and 11-1 in conference play.
From the outset, the game proved challenging for the Lady Coyotes. Arizona Western's pitcher, Lili Vigil German, delivered an impressive performance, pitching a complete game with 2 earned runs off 10 hits. German's resilience on the mound was pivotal in securing her first win of the season.
The Matadors took control early in the game, scoring three runs in both the second and third innings. Highlight contributions included a two-run single by shortstop Jessica Saucedo and a clutch double by second baseman Alejandra Pinon, which drove in the third run of the second inning. The Matadors capitalized on CSN's defensive errors, with two crucial misplays by CSN's second baseman Jocelyn Mina influencing the early scoring.
CSN struggled to answer back, managing to push across only two runs in the fifth inning thanks to a two-run homer by Athena Tonga'onevai. Despite out-hitting the Matadors with 10 hits to their 8, the Lady Coyotes could not capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
CSN's starting pitcher, Aniya Edwards, took the loss after yielding four runs (one earned) in just two innings before Bryn Connors took over. Connors pitched four innings, giving up two unearned runs while keeping the game within reach, but the early deficit proved too much to overcome.
The Lady Coyotes showed flashes of their capability with multiple hits from Chloe Makinney and Justice Lavin, who each collected a pair of hits, but the team generally failed to convert these into significant innings. The Matadors' defense held firm, making crucial plays when needed and maintaining the lead established in the early frames.
With this game, the Lady Coyotes' remarkable run of victories in the ACCAC comes to an end, but they still remain in a dominant position at the top of the conference standings. Both teams will look to build on this series as they continue their season, with CSN aiming to regroup and return to their winning ways in upcoming games.
