HENDERSON, Nev. — April 10, 2025 — The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes capped off a dominant two-game series with a resounding 10-0 shutout victory over the Gateway Community College Geckos on Thursday afternoon at Morse Stadium. With the win, CSN improves to 37-10 on the season, while Gateway falls to 12-29.
Fueled by an early offensive burst and a pair of strong outings on the mound, the Coyotes cruised to a seven-inning run-rule victory, their second in as many days over the Geckos. Right-hander Logan Smith delivered a masterful start, tossing five scoreless innings to earn his sixth win of the season (6-1). He allowed just five hits, walked two, and struck out three across 73 efficient pitches. Evan Festa followed with two clean innings of relief to complete the shutout.
CSN set the tone in the bottom of the first when Roy Durham ripped a two-out triple to right-center and scored moments later on a base hit by Anthony Marnell IV, giving the Coyotes an early 1-0 lead.
In the third, Durham made the highlight reel again, launching a three-run home run to right field that opened up a 4-0 lead. The blast, Durham's third of the season, came after Chaz McNeils was hit by a pitch and Tyler Garritano worked a walk, setting the table for the heart of the CSN lineup.
After Gateway changed pitchers twice in the middle innings, the Coyotes pounced again in the fifth. A pair of wild pitches and a passed ball helped Durham score his third run of the day, and a two-out single by Jack Wheatley drove in two more to push the lead to 7-0.
Durham finished his day 2-for-2 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Wheatley chipped in two hits and a stolen base, while McNelis added a hit, two stolen bases, and a run scored.
CSN closed the door in the seventh with another three-run frame. Alex Rhynes led off with a single and came around to score following an error and an RBI single by Harvey Smerdon, who stayed hot after coming in defensively in the fifth. Jaxson Reiser brought home another with a fielder's choice, and Brandon Swanson capped the scoring with an RBI single down the left field line.
Smerdon was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored off the bench, and Swanson added a hit, an RBI, and a walk in two trips.
The Coyotes' pitching and defense shined as they stranded eight Gecko runners and allowed just six hits on the day. Gateway had runners in scoring position in four of the seven innings but couldn't convert, thanks to timely outs and solid mound work from Smith and Festa.
Gateway's best chance came in the second inning when they had runners at the corners with one out. A single by Aaron Bazan looked promising, but Jaxon Wickes was thrown out at home by Alex Rhynes, and Nick Johnston grounded out to end the threat.
Offensively, Andrew Hunt paced the Geckos with a pair of singles, and Matt Maize added a double in the fourth. Gateway starter Ryan Kao took the loss, surrendering four earned runs over two innings. Three relievers followed, with mixed results.
The victory completed the series sweep for CSN, who outscored Gateway 20-2 over the two games. It also marked the Coyotes' third shutout in their last six contests as they continue to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season.
The Coyotes return to action this weekend, looking to extend their winning ways and further cement their standing as one of the top programs in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference.
