Henderson, NV - The College of Southern Nevada Coyotes continued their strong ACCAC conference campaign with a 9-1 victory over Community Christian College on Friday afternoon at Morse Stadium. The win marked CSN's 38th of the season, improving their overall record to 38-10 and 22-9 in conference play.
Left fielder Chaz McNelis sparked the Coyotes' offense with a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a solo in the park home run in the third inning, an RBI single in the sixth, and two runs scored. His leadoff walk in the first also helped set the tone for a lineup that tallied 11 total hits.
Kaiden Smaka added to the production with a triple, a single, one RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Anthony Marnell IV contributed two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Additional RBIs came from Ashton. Zacher, Tyler Garritano, and Jack Wheatley as CSN scored in five straight innings from the second through the sixth.
After a scoreless first inning, the Coyotes got on the board in the second when Tyler Garritano reached base after being hit by a pitch and later scored on a two-base error in center field following a sacrifice bunt from Kaiden Smaka.
Community Christian tied the game briefly in the top of the third with a solo home run from M. Hillarie, but CSN immediately responded in the bottom half. Chaz McNelis' blast to center field made it 2-1, and Anthony Marnell IV followed with a single, later scoring on Ashton Zacher's RBI hit to push the lead to 3-1.
CSN added a run in the fourth on an RBI groundout by Jack Wheatley, then broke it open with a three-run fifth. Roy Durham and Ashton Zacher pulled off a double steal to set the table, and Tyler Garritano brought home Roy Durham with a sacrifice fly. Kaiden Smaka singled in Ashton Zacher, stole second, advanced to third on an error, and scored on Jack Wheatley's base hit to center.
Starting pitcher Kaden Soder worked four innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run while striking out six. He was relieved by Kody Bialas, who followed with two scoreless innings and five strikeouts of his own. Eric Galvan handled the seventh inning, working around two walks while adding a strikeout to finish off the game.
The CSN staff held Community Christian to four hits and struck out 12 batters in total. Defensively, the Coyotes committed just one error and turned a key double play to limit a fourth-inning threat.
Community Christian dropped to 1-33 on the season. Aside from Hillarie's home run and a stolen base, the Saints struggled to generate offense. Four errors in the field led to multiple unearned runs, and starter C. Romero took the loss after allowing seven runs (six earned) over five innings. A. Herrera pitched the final frame, yielding two additional runs on three hits.
With six consecutive wins under their belt, CSN will look to keep their momentum rolling as they push toward the final stretch of the regular season.
