Coyotes Ride Fast Start, Connors-Cahoon Combo to Series-Win Over AWC

HENDERSON, NV — April 18, 2025 - A three-run first inning and strong pitching performances from Bryn Connors and Mckenna Cahoon powered the College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over Arizona Western College in game two of their ACCAC series Friday afternoon at Lady Coyote Field. The win pushes CSN to 22-17 overall and 14-8 in conference play while clinching the series win ahead of Saturday's doubleheader.

The Coyotes came out aggressive in the opening frame, plating three runs on six hits to jump on Arizona Western starter L. German (8-5). Camryn Hunkins, Jimena Barraza-Caro, and Chloe Makinney each singled to load the bases with no outs. Destinee Lopez followed with an RBI single, and Justice Lavin added a bunt single to bring in another run. The third came via a wild sequence that saw Makinney score on a fielder's choice, capping a perfectly executed small-ball frame.

Makinney continued to shine at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a stolen base, while Hunkins and Barraza-Caro each collected two hits and scored a run. CSN racked up 12 hits total, but German limited the damage beyond the first inning, tossing six strong frames while allowing only one earned run.

On the mound, Connors (6-5) earned the win, throwing 5.1 innings and allowing two runs on six hits while striking out two. After Arizona Western cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth, Cahoon entered in relief and slammed the door with 1.2 innings of one-hit ball to notch her second save of the season.

Defensively, CSN turned in a clean game aside from a single error and executed a key double play to stifle an AWC rally in the fifth. The Coyotes also erased a pair of baserunners with strong defensive sequences, including a caught stealing by catcher Lopez and a heads-up play from the middle infield.

The Matadors made it interesting with a triple and RBI bunt single in the sixth to pull within one, but Cahoon's poise and CSN's team defense kept the lead intact. Arizona Western stranded four runners over the final three innings, unable to break through against the Coyotes' pitching duo.

With the win, CSN improves to 2-0 in the series and will look to complete the sweep in Saturday's twinbill back at Lady Coyote Field. First pitch for game three is scheduled for noon.
