HENDERSON, Nev. (April 19, 2025) — The College of Southern Nevada softball team wrapped up its four-game ACCAC series against Arizona Western College with a strong bounce-back performance, securing a 6-3 win in Saturday's finale at Lady Coyote Field. With the victory, the Coyotes improved to 23-18 overall and 15-9 in conference play.
Sophomore pitcher Mckenna Cahoon delivered a complete-game effort, scattering eight hits across seven innings while allowing three earned runs, striking out four, and walking just one. It marked her seventh win of the season and her second of the weekend.
The Coyotes wasted no time putting pressure on Arizona Western starter L. German, plating two runs in the bottom of the first. Sophomore Camryn Hunkins and freshman Jimena Barraza-Caro both reached to open the frame and scored on a two-run single by Ellie Olson. Olson finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBIs.
Southern Nevada added two more runs in the second inning. Hunkins singled again, stole second, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Destinee Lopez. Moments later, Barraza-Caro scored on a wild pitch, extending the lead to 4-0.
Arizona Western trimmed the lead to 4-1 in the fourth after an RBI single from J. Espinoza, and then added two more in the sixth behind RBI hits from A. Trejo and D. Martinez to close the gap to 4-3.
But CSN answered immediately in the bottom of the sixth. Hunkins and Barraza-Caro reached safely once again, and Olson brought home Hunkins with a fielder's choice to add insurance. Justice Lavin followed with a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Barraza-Caro and pushing the Coyotes' lead to 6-3.
Hunkins and Barraza-Caro each scored three times and combined for four of CSN's nine hits. Olson and Lavin drove in five of the team's six runs, while freshman Mattingly Mauzey added a pinch-hit single to keep the rally going in the sixth.
Despite being out-hit 12-9, the Coyotes capitalized on four Arizona Western errors and stranded only five runners to finish the series on a high note.
Southern Nevada returns to ACCAC play next week as it prepares for another critical conference road series.
