PRESCOTT, AZ (April 25, 2025) – The College of Southern Nevada softball team opened its four-game series against Yavapai College in dominant fashion Friday afternoon, cruising to a 9-1 victory behind a strong offensive showing and a stellar complete game in the circle from Mckenna Cahoon.
With the win, CSN improves to 24-18 overall and 16-9 in ACCAC play, continuing their push toward the postseason.
The Coyotes set the tone early, striking for two runs in the first inning. Jimena Barraza-Caro drew a walk and came around to score on a single by Destinee Lopez. Moments later, Chloe Makinney scored on a groundout by Justice Lavin to give CSN a 2-0 lead.
After a quiet second inning, CSN added two more runs in the third. Camryn Hunkins opened the frame with a double and later scored on a clutch two-run single from Lavin, extending the Coyotes' advantage to 4-0.
The fourth inning saw Southern Nevada break the game open. After a walk by Chaleah Workman and an error, Hunkins singled, setting the table for Barraza-Caro, who roped a bases-clearing triple to right field. Makinney followed with a single to plate Barraza, capping a four-run inning that pushed the lead to 8-0.
Yavapai managed to scratch across a run in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of an error and a groundout to make it 8-1. However, CSN immediately answered back in the fifth. After a walk to Athena Tonga'onevai and a stolen base by Hunkins, the Coyotes tacked on their final run when Hunkins delivered an RBI single—her third hit of the night—to bring the score to 9-1.
Offensively, Hunkins led the charge by going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a double, and an RBI. Barraza-Caro finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, three RBIs, a walk, a triple, and a stolen base. Lavin also contributed with two RBIs on a pair of singles.
In the circle, Cahoon was impressive, earning her ninth win of the season. The freshman tossed a complete game five-hitter, allowing just one unearned run while striking out one and walking three over 5.0 innings. Cahoon threw 70 pitches and induced two double plays to help keep the Roughriders in check.
Yavapai's offense was held to just four hits, and starting pitcher Breanne Petty took the loss, allowing eight runs (five earned) over four innings.
CSN also played clean defense outside of a single error, turning two double plays to halt Yavapai rallies.
The Coyotes and Roughriders will continue the series Friday evening in Prescott.
