Box Score THATCHER, AZ (May 10, 2025) — In a winner-take-all elimination battle, the College of Southern Nevada Lady Coyotes edged No. 4 seed Yavapai College, 1-0, on Saturday morning to punch their ticket to the Region 1 Championship game. With the victory, CSN improves to 28-24 overall and advances to face No. 3 Arizona Western needing two wins to capture the regional crown and earn a berth to the NJCAA National Tournament.
Both teams put on a pitching clinic in Thatcher, but it was CSN freshman
Mckenna Cahoon who stole the spotlight. The right-hander was dominant in the circle, going the distance in a complete-game shutout. Cahoon scattered four hits over seven innings, walked just one, and struck out two while keeping the Roughriders off the scoreboard.
Scoreless through five innings, the Coyotes broke through in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore
Chloe Makinney delivered the biggest hit of the day—a clutch RBI triple that plated the game's only run. Makinney's drive into the right-center gap scored
Camryn Hunkins, who had singled earlier in the inning and was a spark plug at the top of the order, finishing 2-for-3 on the day.
Makinney's lone hit was all the Coyotes needed behind Cahoon's stellar effort. CSN managed four hits in total, but their clean execution and pitching efficiency proved the difference in a tight postseason duel.
Yavapai starter Mackenzie Durr was equally impressive in defeat, tossing six strong innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just four hits and one earned run. The Roughriders played flawless defense, turning a double play and committing no errors, but couldn't generate enough offense to back up their ace. Hayden McGuire led Yavapai with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
With back-to-back elimination game wins under their belt, the Lady Coyotes now turn their focus to the Region 1 Championship matchup against Arizona Western. CSN will need to defeat the Matadors twice on Saturday afternoon to advance to the NJCAA National Tournament in Yuma, Arizona.
